Gauri Lankesh Murder: 4 Remanded in Police Custody

Four persons suspected of involvement in the killing of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh were remanded in police custody for 10 days by a city court on Thursday, 31 May.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) produced Manohar Gundappa Edve (30), Sujith Kumar alias Praveen (37), Amol Kale alias Bhaisab (40) and Amit Degwekar alias Pradeep before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Court and sought their custody for interrogation.

The four persons were arrested recently for allegedly hatching a plot to kill Kannada writer K S Bhagawan, known for his anti-Hindutva stance, according to SIT sources.

No Bids Received for Air India Stake Sale: Govt

The government on Thursday, 31 May said no bids have been received for the strategic disinvestment of Air India.

The deadline for submission of Expression of Interest ended on Thursday.

“As informed by the Transaction Adviser, no response has been received for the Expression of Interest floated for the strategic disinvestment of Air India,” the Civil Aviation Ministry said in a tweet.

“Further course of action will be decided appropriately,” it added.

NGT Notice to AAP Govt on Plea for Action Against Jhuggi Dwellers

A former legislator has moved the National Green Tribunal alleging that “illegal” residents of a slum were causing air pollution and seeking action against them.

The plea prompted the green panel to seek responses from the Delhi government and others on the matter.

A bench, headed by acting NGT Chairperson Justice Jawad Rahim, issued notices to the AAP government, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, District Magistrate (East) and unnamed persons living in slums of Dallupura village in east Delhi, asking them to file reply by 13 July.

The tribunal was hearing a plea filed by former AAP MLA Vinod Kumar Binny alleging that persons living in the jhuggi cluster were burning wires to extract copper during the midnight hours leading to air pollution.

Karnataka CM Pitches for US Consulate in Bengaluru

Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Thursday, 31 May pitched for a US consulate in Bengaluru during his conversation with the US Ambassador to India Kenneth Juster.

The chief minister spoke about having consulates of all countries in Bengaluru, especially the US Consulate.

Kumaraswamy also spoke about the strong ties Karnataka had with the US and said the setting up of consulate at the earliest would facilitate visa requirements of the citizens visiting the US, an official release said.

He also assured Juster that the government would provide all infrastructure and other requirements such as land and building for the purpose.

UIDAI extends deadline to deploy Virtual ID system to July 1

UIDAI has extended by one month to July 1 the deadline for service providers and agencies like banks and telecom companies to fully deploy Virtual ID system and accept these IDs in lieu of Aadhaar number.

UIDAI earlier stated that it will be compulsory for all agencies that undertake authentication to accept VID from their users from June 1, 2018 – has decided to give one more month after the user agencies said they needed more time to switch to the new system.

Harvey Weinstein Indicted on Multiple Rape and Sex Crime Charges

Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been indicted on charges of rape in the first and third degrees and first-degree criminal sexual act, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said.

Weinstein was arraigned last week on the same charges, seven months after women began to come forward with stories alleging sexual harassment, molestation and rape.

China has invited all the member states of the United Nations to jointly utilise its future space station expected to be ready by 2022.

2 Militants Killed in Encounter in Handwara, Jammu & Kashmir

Two unidentified militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Handwara area of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, 31 May.

An army official said the militants were killed in an operation in Qaziabad forests in Kupwara district.

He added that searches were going on in the area.

Petrol Price Cut by 7 Paise, Diesel by 5 Paise per Litre New Delhi

Petrol price was on Thursday, 31 May, reduced by 7 paise a litre and diesel by 5 paise, This comes a day after fuel prices were reduced by a meagre 1 paisa, and 16 days after continuos surge in the prices.

Petrol in Delhi now costs Rs 78.35 a litre, down from Rs 78.42, while diesel has been cut to Rs 69.25 per litre from Rs 69.30.
