The on-field workouts at the 2018 NFL Combine reach their final day this Monday. The players participating today are the defensive backs.
In last year’s draft, the Cowboys carpet-bombed the secondary position with four picks. Three of those picks look like they are going to pay off in Jourdan Lewis, Chidobe Awuzie and Xavier Woods. So the question is will they go back to the well in a significant way this year? There has been talk that Orlando Scandrick’s time in Dallas is up, but the Cowboys will also be moving Byron Jones back to corner. With Lewis, Awuzie, Jones plus Anthony Brown, the Cowboys have four corners, but they will likely take another because that’s what you have to do in the NFL, stock up on corners. But they will likely take one in the mid-to-later rounds, or they might even grab a vet in free agency.
With Jones moving to corner, the safety spot includes the aforementioned Woods, Jeff Heathand Kavon Frazer. While Woods has potential, the Cowboys may be looking to upgrade the spot. Safety is more of a need than corner, but just how much of a need is unknown. Cowboys fans may like to see Derwin James with a star on his helmet, but he’s likely going to be gone too early for Dallas.
