IMPHOTO: Free Photoshop alternative Photo and Image Editor software for Windows 10

GIMP is one of the best free open-source photo & image editing software. But some users believed that GIMP was a few features away from being a complete solution to photo editing needs, and so someone created a modified version of GIMP with improved features and options, and they call it GIMPHOTO. Gimphoto comes with GIMP loaded with useful plugins and resources. The UI is tweaked a bit here and there.

GIMPHOTO for Windows 10

GIMPHOTO comes packed with Gimp plugins that have been developed by other developers across the globe. These plugins can help you extend features and add more options while editing an image. Let us take a look at some of the outstanding feature of this free Photoshop alternative software.

GIMPHOTO for Windows 10

UI

Gimphoto makes use of Clearlooks GTK engine to render the UI. The interface is almost the same, but you may notice changes in the appearance of controls. They are more smooth and flat because of the Clearlooks engine. Gimphoto also includes a tool that lets you use any other GTK theme and customize the UI more easily.

Menu Convention

A few changes to the menu structure have been made. Although, the naming convention remains the same so that you can still follow GIMP tutorials as it is they were before. The right click menu has also been modified to add more tools so that they are easily accessible.

Additional Plugins

This section covers the additional plugins that come preinstalled with Gimphoto.

Save for Web

This plugin lets you save images in webioptimized quality. Since disk space is an expensive resource these days, you can create images that are beautiful to look and are small in size. This option has been added to the ‘File’ menu.

David’s Batch Processing

This plugin exactly does what it says. You can easily manipulate images in batch mode without learning any new scripting language. You can perform operations like rotate, resize, color, blur sharpen, crop and even rename. This is a pretty nifty plugin and can help you a lot if you use batch operations.

Separate+

This plugin adds some really useful color management features to the GIMP. Gimphoto uses this plugin for RGB to CMYK conversion. This feature is mostly required by professionals and needs in-depth knowledge of digital imaging. You can find this plugin under ‘Image’ -> ‘Mode’.

LayerEffects

This script lets you add some effects to the separate layers of the image. You can add effects like border, gradient, glow, and shadow.

Other than these plugins, a few other additions have been made. You will find a new and improved set of brushes awaiting you. A new and modified brush set has replaced the default one, and the developer has stated to improve it further and add more brushes to it.

The default set of gradients have been modified, and almost 30 new gradients have been added to create button, symbol or graphics for Web 2.0 design style.

So that was pretty much that has been changed to make this tool more useful. All in all, Gimphoto is a complete photo editor that can handle most of your image editing needs.

Moreover, Gimphoto updates come along with GIMP updates. So the latest version of Gimphoto is now running upon GIMP 2.4 stable version while GIMP has been updated to 2.8 in the meantime and we expect a new Gimphoto update with all the new GIMP feature like single window mode, etc. With this tool, you get all the GIMP functionality with more features.

Gimphoto is an outstanding feature-rich image editing software that does what it says. It can serve as a PhotoShop alternative software for those who cannot afford PhotoShop. The UI is very easy to understand, the image is in the center and the toolbox and others sub-windows are aligned around it. You can easily perform basic and complex tasks on Gimphoto. Click here to download Gimphoto. The software is Open-Source, and the source code is available for further modifications.

How to . . . enable the Windows 10 dark theme – and why

The dark theme in Windows will get rid of some of the glaring white and bright backgrounds for the operating system.

The Windows 10 Anniversary update introduced last year brought a few new tricks, some that have proved very useful. One of these is the new Dark theme that takes all the apps in Windows 10 and gives them a bit of a makeover at the click of a button.

What does it do?

The dark theme in Windows will get rid of some of the glaring white and bright backgrounds for the operating system.

Maybe you like using your laptop late at night or in low light without burning your retinas out. Maybe it’s an aesthetic preference. Some people feel it’s less stressful on the eyes working for long periods of time with a darker theme. Whatever the reason, it’s nice that Microsoft is offering an easy option for this.

Enabling the dark theme in Windows 10 used to require a bit of messing around with the registry, but these days the process is as simple as toggling it on from the settings menu.

Click on the Start Menu. Click on the Settings cog, then Personalisation>colours and scroll down to the end of the menu. You’ll see an option to choose your app mode. By default it’s set to light. Change it to dark and you’ll see an immediate effect.

When you go into Windows apps, you’ll see the background colour has now been changed to black, making your desktop an altogether more tolerable place to work if you prefer more muted tones.

However, some things retain their white background – File Explorer, Edge and Microsoft Office, to name but a few. It also won’t have an impact on third-party software.

There are options, however.

For desktop applications such as File Explorer you have the choice to use the built-in high-contrast settings or go for a third-party theme. If you opt for the high-contrast settings, the main goal here is to make the screen easier to read rather than to present a slick, dark theme. In other words, it’s not the prettiest, but it does the job.

You can also customise certain parts of it – what colour hyperlinks show up as, how highlighted text looks, and so on – and create you own customer dark theme. To do this, go to the Personalisation menu mentioned previously, go to Colours, and at the very bottom of the menu, click on high-contrast settings. From there you can choose what high-contrast theme to enable and customise.

Edge:

If you are using Microsoft’s built-in browser you will have to enable the dark theme within its settings to dial down the brightness. Open Edge and click on the menu button (the three dots) in the top right corner. Select Settings and under Choose a theme, select Dark from the drop-down box.

Third party-browsers:

If you are using Chrome or Firefox, enabling Windows 10’s dark theme will have no effect on your colour scheme within those programmes. You can, however, download extensions or add-ons that will turn down the lights. For Chrome, try Morpheon Dark or Slinky Elegant, both available free. For Firefox, take a look at the Dark Fox theme.

Microsoft Office:

You can enable the dark themes for each programme you want to use – Word, Excel, etc – so you can have dark themes in Word. for example, without having it for your spreadsheets too. Or you can enable them across the board.

For the former, open the programme you want to turn dark. Go to the File menu>Options>Personalise. In the drop-down menu select Black. Click OK.

To enable it across all Office programmes, go to the File Menu on one Office programme, click Account and, under Office Theme, select Black from the drop-down menu.

How to Stop Windows 10 from Syncing Themes Between PCs

If you’re running Windows 10 on multiple PCs and using the same Microsoft account, you have probably noticed that your settings and themes are following you. However, maybe you want a different theme on your laptop, desktop, or tablet.

Here’s a look at how to stop the latest version of Windows from syncing your theme between devices.

Windows 10: Disable Syncing Themes

If you would rather have unique themes to differentiate your PCs, you can. Here’s how:

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sync your settings.Windows 10 Settings stop synching themes
      1. From the right-hand pane, select Individual sync settings.
      2. Toggle the Theme setting to off.
        Windows 10 Individual sync settings

That’s all there is to it!

Now, you can choose different themes on your different Windows 10 machines, even if your computers are linked by your Microsoft Account. If you want to go even more extreme, you can set up your multiple Windows 10 devices independently by creating a local account. When you use a local account, none of your settings will sync across computers.

For more on Windows 10 themes, make sure you check out our other articles. As Andre covered earlier, you can now install themes from the Windows Store after installing the Windows 10 Creators Update. This is a departure from the previous method for installing wallpaper themes in Windows 10 from the Control Panel. Allowing you to get themes from the Windows Store is a step toward more user-friendly customization, rather than treating it like an advanced “under the hood” feature.

Download Windows 10 themes from the Windows Store

Win10 themesIf you want to download official themes for Microsoft’s operating system you can do so at the moment by going here, and choosing the theme you want from a selection of categories including Featured, Animals, Games, Movies, Places & Landscapes, and Panoramic. There are also ‘Compatible with Windows 7’ and ‘Compatible with the new Windows’ categories.

In Windows 10, you can also go to Settings > Personalization > Themes > Themes Settings, and click ‘Get more themes online’. However, there’s now another way to get Windows 10 themes, and that’s from the Windows Store.

Microsoft describes themes as a combination of desktop background pictures, window colors, and sounds.

In order to download themes from the store, for the moment at least, you need to be a Windows Insider as this is something that will be introduced to the masses in the forthcoming Creators Update.

To see the available themes, go to the Windows Store by clicking here. While you can browse the selection, and even get to the point where you can click the ‘Get the app’ button without being an Insider, you won’t be able to install a theme.

If you are an Insider, however, all you need to do is click that button, then click on Get, and it will install.

Dark High Contrast Theme for Windows 10

Themes in Windows have not changed all that much since the release of Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system.

All versions of Windows ship with a selection of themes that you can switch between. Microsoft divides themes up into regular themes and high contrast themes, but that is about it.

Each theme may change the desktop background, color scheme, sounds and screen saver. If you want more customization, you need to patch system files first to install full themes afterwards.

These full themes may change other interface elements, icons for instance.

Dark High Contrast Theme

windows 10 dark theme

Windows 10 does not ship with a “real” dark theme. The closest to that is the high contrast black theme the operating system ships with, but the color scheme it uses is rather weird and probably not to the liking of most Windows users who want a dark theme.

Dark High Contrast Theme is a new theme for Windows 10 that changes that. The theme can be installed without patching system files. It is also a high contrast theme, but one that is optimized specifically to paint most of the interface in black or dark colors.

If you want, it is a modified copy of Windows 10’s own high contrast black theme. Its main achievement is that it takes away the weird colors and replaces them for the most part with better fitting ones.

You may customize the color scheme by loading C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe%20shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL%20desk.cpl,Advanced,@@Advanced in Windows Explorer.

customize theme

One thing that you may want to do is change “selected text” colors as black on black is used by default. This means that you cannot distinguish between regular and selected text by default after enabling the Dark High Contrast Theme on your PC.

Simply change the “selected text” colors to modify that. You may also change colors used to display the window background, text, hyperlinks, disabled text, active window title, or buttons.

The theme displays the majority of Windows menus and applications fine. You may run into some display issues in third-party applications though.

The color scheme in Firefox for instance may not be to your liking, but you may use controls provided by the browser to change that. Load about:preferences#content in the browser and click on the colors button to modify hypertext colors and others.

This is not an option for all apps or programs though.

Closing Words

Dark high Contrast Theme adds more dark to Windows 10 than any other theme that does not require modification of system files. If you like your operating system dark, this is a theme you may want to check out.

Since it takes a click to enable and undo any changes as well, there is little that can go wrong if you give it a try.

Microsoft to sell Windows 10 themes in Creators Update

windows-10-themes

Microsoft talked a bit about the Windows 10 Creators update earlier this week, when it announced the forthcoming changes to Windows 10. It didn’t dive very deep, however, and now new details are painting a clearer picture of what to expect – including in-operating system purchases. Yeah, a spin on in-app purchases.

The Verge covered several of the new changes like custom access colors, action center changes, a new Groove Music Maker app and more. The one that stuck out most, though, is a new “Themes” function. No, themes aren’t new, but charging for them is.

According to Tom Warren, who posted the above screenshot, Microsoft will sell various themes, some that tie in to games or other properties. It’s similar to what we see on the Xbox One, so it makes sense, but it also feels weird. Note how a Minecraft theme is priced at $1.99, for example, while a League of Legends Windows 10 theme is $2.49. Another, “Bangtan Boys” is free.

Themes aren’t new, but microtransactions in Windows are

If you go way, way back, you might remember some third parties used to sell theme packs for operating systems like Windows XP, but this just feels different, like in-app purchases that don’t really need to exist. I’m all for decking out your operating system with custom colors, but paying Microsoft for that kind of stuff? Eh, weird.

Themes will be available in the Windows Store when the Windows 10 Creator’s Update launches early next year.

Microsoft may start selling Windows 10 themes in the Windows Store

So you think we were done with unreported features for Windows 10 Creators Update? If so, then you were wrong. Microsoft might start selling themes via the Windows Store soon.

A new image reported, yet again by Marvin, a user of the big “Microsoft Group” on Telegram, reveals that a new feature may be coming to the Windows Store soon. Themes were previously only possible as “MSStyles” themes and they could only change some small aspects of the system without an unofficial patch. However this may change, as the themes on the Store definitely have paid versions, and who would buy a theme that only includes a new wallpaper and an accent colour?

The Themes could change some system aspects like the Action Centre and the Taskbar in Windows to make your device even more personal than before. However, if they only change the wallpaper and the colour of the system, like the old themes did, then they are guaranteed to fail with a price tag.

These themes seem to have been made in collaboration with different companies, as they include a lot of copyrighted content. It’s nice to see Microsoft partnering up with other corporations to make sure their Windows 10 users get as pleasant experience as possible.

Facebook brings Osquery to Windows

osquery

Earlier this week, Facebook announced that it is bringing its Osquery to Windows. The company launched Osquery back in 2014 for macOS and Linux, but it is finally bringing it to Windows devices. Osquery is mainly for system admins — it allows users to search for process details and manage other parts of the system using SQL queries. Facebook stated:

Today, we’re excited to announce the availability of an osquery developer kit for Windows! Security teams can now build customized osquery solutions for their Windows networks. In 2014, Facebook open sourced osquery, an SQL-powered detection tool for Linux and OS X that provides real-time insight into the state of corporate infrastructure. osquery allows you to write SQL-based queries that explore operating system data. With osquery, SQL tables represent abstract concepts such as running processes, loaded kernel modules, open network connections, browser plugins, hardware events or file hashes. Having timely, reliable visibility into operations running throughout your network is critical to quickly identify and investigate anomalies.
