[Update: Gone from the beta too] Twitter removes its homescreen widget support from the latest alpha

Twitter is struggling to figure out what it wants to be when it grows up. Life can be tough when you’re a social network that almost everyone has heard about but no one knows how to use when they’re just joining for the first time.

But despite these tumultuous times at Twitter’s headquarters, the Android app has seen some of its best days in the past few months: an overhauled Material Design inspired interface, a test for a night mode, Android N Direct Reply, and more. But instead of giving something new, the latest Twitter alpha 6.9.0 takes away a feature: the homescreen widget.

If you have the widget added to your homescreen, you will see the above message instead when you’re on the latest alpha. The widget is clearly no longer functional. Whether this change will carry through to the beta and stable versions remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Twitter’s Android developers are at least considering the possibility of removing the widget support altogether. Maybe they found out it wasn’t used all that much and the people who had added it were so few that it didn’t warrant keeping it alive and supported. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, feel free to cry foul in the comments below.

Twitter co-founder Ev Williams slashes 50 jobs at blogging site Medium

Ev Williams, the founder of Medium — the blogging site started by the Twitter co-founder – has announced it will slash 50 jobs, or a third of its workforce, as it closes its New York and Washington offices.

In a lengthy post on Medium, Williams blamed the ad-driven economics of the web and admitted he needed to refocus in order to find a new business strategy, reported the New York Post.

The job losses are in business, sales and support, he said.

“They tended to do packages of sponsored content more than what you would consider a standard ad. It’s hard to scale an ad business these days without a standardized ad model built into the platform,” said Noah Malin, head of social MEC, North America.

Medium built a name for itself as a place where people could answer their critics. Postings and readership have risen 300 percent since last year, Williams said.

In late 2015, Amazon’s chief spokesman Jay Carney used Medium to respond to a critical New York Times story on the company’s tough workplace practices.

But growth hasn’t kept pace with spending at Medium, and Williams lashed out at ad-driven media as a “broken system” that doesn’t serve readers — replete with “fake news” and clickbait that his startup has failed to fix.

“The vast majority of articles, videos, and other ‘content’ we all consume on a daily basis is paid for  —  directly or indirectly  —  by corporations who are funding it in order to advance their goals,” Williams wrote. “And it is measured, amplified, and rewarded based on its ability to do that. Period. As a result, we get … well, what we get. And it’s getting worse.”

In response, Williams said Medium will search for a “new model for writers and creators to be rewarded, based on the value they’re creating for people.”

“It is too soon to say exactly what this will look like,” Williams wrote. “This strategy is more focused but also less proven. It will require time to get it right, as well as some different skills.”

Results included Twitter handles for top influencers (spoiler alert: Our CEO, Lee Odden, is included), along with the most commonly used hashtags and the top publications shared. Facebook Adds Automated Captioning Tool for Video Ads
On Wednesday, Facebook announced what this author describes as a “host of new features for video ads, highlighted by an automated captioning tool.” Naturally, I was curious about this host of other features which includes new metrics for advertisers, verified analytics from Moat and 100 percent in-view ad buying. So what’s the point of the headliner for digital marketers? Facebook is simply trying to improve the experience of people who view videos on their platform with the sound off. Let’s be honest, most of us initially watch an ad with the sound off. I’ve had my share of ‘AH! Oh, that was a video ad’ moments where I’ve nearly had the pants scared right off me due to loud volume and the element of surprise. Reducing negative reactions to unexpected loud ads will certainly improve the Facebook experience. SocialTimes

Content Marketing Output Surged 35% In 2015, While Engagement Dropped 17% [Report]
Over the past five years, we’ve seen a big increase in content production from marketing departments nationwide and all around the globe. But as with any market, the more content there is out there, the harder it can be to convince others to engage with your own. And while creating great content is the first step in earning the engagement of your target audience, great content alone is no longer enough. You need to make sure it gets in front of the people for whom it’s intended which takes optimization and strategic distribution. Find out more in this study fromTrackMaven! Marketing Land

The State of the Mobile Experience: How People Use Their Phones Today [Infographic]
I’m going to say something that may come as a surprise. People are using their mobile phones for way more than making calls. So maybe that’s not as surprising as I initially suggested, by now we all know that our phones are essentially our second, detached brain. This helpful infographic from HubSpot goes into detail about how people are using their phones and what those statistics mean for the rest of us. Most surprising, 79% of millennials are using their phones to make at least one call daily, and only 17% are using them to take one or more selfies daily. HubSpot

What Marketers Should Know About Twitter’s New Algorithmic ‘Catch-Up’ Feed
If you’ve been on Twitter lately, you may have noticed some controversy over Twitter’s decision to adopt a Facebook-like algorithm that curates the most popular Tweets and sticks them right in your news feed. What I didn’t hear about, however, is the user gets to decide if they want to use this new feature or not. Ad Age said “On Wednesday Twitter will start giving the people the option to have the social network algorithmically curate their feeds to show them the top tweets they may have missed since the last time they checked Twitter.” What’s most interesting is that the algorithm only curates content with the most organic engagement, not actions triggered by paid promotion, so only the best content will win out in the end. Complete Social Meta Tags

NGFB adds Open Graph (Facebook), Pinterest Rich Pins, Twitter Cards, and Search Engine Optimization meta tags to the head section of webpages. These meta tags are used by Google Search and all social websites to describe and display your content correctly (title, description, hashtags, images, videos, product, author profile / authorship, publisher, etc.). NGFB is a complete social sharing solution that uses theexisting content of your webpages to build HTML meta tags — There’s no need to manually enter / configure any additional values or settings (although many settings and options are available). See examples from Google Search, Google+, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, StumbleUpon, Tumblr, etc. — along with screenshots of the NGFB settings pages.

NGFB provides the Summary, Summary with Large Image, and Player Twitter Cards —including configurable image sizes for each card type. The Photo, Gallery, and ProductTwitter Cards were deprecated by Twitter on July 3rd, 2015.

3rd Party Integration (Pro version)

Aside from the additional support for Twitter Cards, the main difference between the NGFB Free and Pro versions is the integration of 3rd party plugins and services.

Images and Videos

NGFB detects and uses all images – associated or included in your content – including the WordPress image gallery and NextGEN Gallery shortcodes. WordPress Media Library images (and NextGEN Gallery in the Pro version) are resized according to their intended audience (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc). The Pro version also detects embedded videos from Slideshare, Vimeo, Wistia, and Youtube (including their preview images).

NGFB (Pro version) also includes support for NextGEN Gallery versions 1 and 2 albums, galleries and images (shortcodes, image tags, album / gallery preview images, etc.).

Enhanced SEO

NGFB (Pro version) integrates with Yoast SEO, All in One SEO Pack, and HeadSpace2 SEO — making sure your custom SEO settings are reflected in the Open Graph, Rich Pin, and Twitter Card meta tags.

eCommerce Products

NGFB (Pro version) also supports Easy Digital Downloads, MarketPress – WordPress eCommerce, WooCommerce versions 1 and 2, and WP e-Commerce product pages, creating appropriate meta tags for Facebook Products, Twitter Product Cards andPinterest Rich Pins, including variations and additional / custom images.

Forums and Social

NGFB (Pro version) supports bbPress, BuddyPress (see the BuddyPress Integration Notes), and BuddyPress rtMedia, making sure your meta tags reflect the page content, including appropriate titles, descriptions, images, etc. Social sharing buttons can also be added to bbPress single template pages and BuddyPress activities.

Proven Performance

NGFB is fast and coded for performance, making full use of all available caching techniques (persistent / non-persistent object and disk caching). NGFB loads only the library files and object classes it needs, keeping it small, fast, and yet still able to support a wide range of 3rd party integration features.
