Google Calendar finally supports iOS Today Widgets

Google Calendar finally supports iOS Today Widgets

If you’re a devout iPhone user but also rely on Google Calendar to manage your schedule over Apple’s default offering, there’s an awesome new feature for the iOS app that might make your busy day a bit easier. A new update to the Google Calendar app introduces support for iOS’s Today View widgets, those mini app features that can be found to the left of the lock screen. This means instead of opening the app, a glance at your upcoming events are just a swipe away.

When you add Google Calendar to the Today View, the by default the widget will display the next two upcoming events. This can be expanded by tapping the “Show More” button, allowing a total of six events to be displayed.

Alternatively, instead of swiping over to the Today View from the home or lock screen, iPhone 6s and 7 users can use a 3D Touch gesture on the app icon to view this same schedule preview.

That’s really all there is to it. It may not sound like much, especially since by default Apple’s Calendar app has both Today and What’s Next widgets, but this is the first time Google Calendar has had any widget, and for those users easier access to their schedule is always a nice option.

Google Calendar for iOS Update Finally Brings the Today Widget, More

Google Calendar for iOS Update Finally Brings the Today Widget, More

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The update is already available on App Store
  • The app widget shows two upcoming events by default
  • The widget can be extended to see up to four upcoming events

Google Calendar app for iOS has finally received a feature that should have ideally been added long time ago by the company – the Today Widget. While iOS has been supporting widgets for some time now, the search giant has only now added the Today Widget to its Calendar app on the platform that allows users to see the upcoming events from the home screen itself.

With Google Calendar for iOS version 2.4.0 update, which is already available in the App Store, Google has added support for Today Widget to the calendar app and users will now be able to see two upcoming events by default in the Today View section, as pointed out in a report by 9To5Mac. This can further be expanded to see four upcoming events.

Notably, Google Calendar users can also get a glance of upcoming events on iPhone 6s and later by using 3D Touch – hard pressing the app’s icon on the Home screen. In order to add the Today Widget, just like you add other widgets, you will need to swipe right from the Home screen and tap on the edit button at the bottom of the screen.

“Today Widget – Get a quick look at your day’s events directly in the Today View of your iPhone or iPadthanks to the new Calendar widget,” the company said in its changelog for the update.

Let us know in comment section down below if you will be using the widget going ahead or think that there are other calendar apps that offer more utility.

Keeping track of birthdays, meetings and other important events just got a lot easier for iPhone and iPad users.

The widget was introduced to the App Store with the release of the latest version of Google Calendar, version 2.4.0, released on July 6.

This is the first time Google Calendar has released a widget for iOS, nearly three years after widgets first launched on the operating system.

It features a Show More button in the top right hand corner that will reveal another two upcoming dates.

These may be from the following day, if you have two or fewer events planned for today according to reports in 9to5Mac.

To access the widget, you will need to update to the latest version of Calendar.

Once installed, you can add it by swiping right from the Home screen and tapping the Edit button at the bottom of the search screen.

On the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7, the preview can also be accessed by using the 3D Touch gesture on the Google Calendar icon.

To do so, you simply push down hard on the Google Calendar home screen icon.

Announcing the new feature on Twitter, a Google spokesman said: ‘Get your day at a glance, right from your homescreen thanks to our new Today widget for iOS.’

Google recently updated its Calendar app to include a Families feature.

Writing on a blog post about the service Anita Yuen, director of product management lead for families at Google, said: ‘Popcorn. Snuggles. Sniffles. Families share a lot of stuff.

‘And now we’re making it even easier to share and stay connected with each other by giving you more to do with your family group on Google.

‘Now whether it’s a new TV show on your DVR, the soccer practice schedule, this week’s to-do list, or family photos from over the weekend, families can do more with YouTube TV, Google Calendar, Keep and Photos.’

GOOGLE’S NEW FAMILIES FEATURE LETS YOU EASILY SHARE DATES AND REMINDERS

Sharing content and keeping track of important events with your family just got a lot easier, thanks to a new feature being introduced by Google.

The firm’s Families option allows you to send multimedia, including photos, notes, and dates for your diary, with multiple people at the click of a button.

The feature will expand upon sharing options currently available on some of the company’s key apps.

A new 'family group' option will appear in Google Photos (pictured), allowing videos and images to be shared with the group with a few taps of the screen

A new ‘family group’ option will appear in Google Photos (pictured), allowing videos and images to be shared with the group with a few taps of the screen

Google already offers the option to share Android apps, movies, music, ebooks and YouTube TV shows with your family.

The new Families feature brings together these existing functions and adds additional apps under one  umbrella.

Families will allow you to create a group of up to six people, including yourself, that will enable one click sharing across a number of useful apps.

This includes Google Calendar, the Keep note app, and Photos.

Collaborative Keep notes can be created (left), so that you and your loved ones can keep track of shopping and “to do” lists. And a group calendar will also be automatically created, enabling each member of your family to add important upcoming events

To set up a family group, visit Google’s Families page.

A new option will then appear in Photos, allowing videos and images to be shared with the group with a few taps of the screen.

A group calendar will also be automatically created, enabling each member of your family to add important upcoming events.

Writing Element Queries Today Using EQCSS

A man looking at his phone and computer screen with different inkblots on them.

We are all familiar with using media queries in CSS to change the appearance of an element based on screen width. Element queries are similar to media queries, however, now the responsive conditions apply to individual elements on a web page instead of the viewport. For example, you can now apply different style rules to an element based on its own width, the number of characters that it contains or how much the user has scrolled.

Why Do We Need Element Queries?

As I mentioned in the introduction, element queries can help you style elements based on a number of properties instead of just the width and height of the viewport. Other than that, there are a few other situations where the library can prove to be of great use.

Let’s say you have just created a beautiful responsive layout where all the elements fit together perfectly. Now, you are asked to add another column to the web page alongside existing ones. This will reduce the space available for all columns.

Your images and text which had perfect proportions for an 800px wide column on 1366px wide viewport may not look so good inside a 600px wide column on the same viewport. In such cases, the viewport width has not changed at all but individual columns are narrower because they had to make space for the sidebar. Using element queries instead of media queries in situations like this one can save you a lot of time because you won’t have to rewrite the CSS every time there is a change in the layout.

In the following demo, if we have a smaller viewport (narrower than 500px), we set the image width to 100% and move it all into a single column. However, on a larger viewport, if you click on the “Add Sidebar” button, the width of our main column reduces significantly without any change in viewport width. Therefore, the image looks too small because the viewport width has not changed.

Now, let’s assume you are creating a widget or plugin and you are using media queries to make it responsive. The problem here is that the widget can be inside a container whose width is equal to the viewport or a container whose width is just one-fourth of the viewport. If the width of the widget depends on the width of its container, relying on the size of the viewport to style it properly won’t work. Element queries can now come to the rescue! Element queries can work well here because they use the widget’s own width to style it.

In the image below, the same widget has been placed twice on a web page. You can see that the viewport width is the same but the width of these two widgets is different. Since the style rules are being applied based on the width of widget, both of them fit perfectly in the layout.

Two items displaying differently in the same viewport

Using element queries, the responsive conditions for an element become independent of the page layout. Therefore, you can create and style components like navigation bars and tables without worrying about surrounding elements. This means that a pricing table created for website A can be used directly in website B. It can be of immense help when you are creating templates.

Getting Started with EQCSS

To use element queries in your projects, you will have to include EQCSS.js in your HTML. You can download the file from their GitHub repository or link directly to the minified file hosted on CDNjs.

The plugin supports all modern browsers including IE9 and above. If you intend to support IE8, you will also have to include a polyfill in your project. The polyfill needs to be included before the actual plugin.

RBI meeting today: Key data that could influence policy rate decision

Market watchers would expect some information on currency notes printed, the deposits with banks and how RBI plans to manage excess liquidity in the banking system. Photo:

Mumbai: Wednesday’s monetary policy announcement is going to be all the more crucial as it is likely to offer some guidance and clarity on the impact of the high-value currency note withdrawal on economic growth and inflation.

Market watchers would expect some information on the number of currency notes printed, the deposits with banks and how the Reserve Bank of India plans to manage excess liquidity in the system.

Here’s a look at the numbers that will surround the policy rate decision.

Inflation continues to soften

Consumer price index-based inflation has consistently eased during this financial year, opening up more space for the central bank and the monetary policy committee (MPC) to favour a rate cut. With a growth hit likely from demonetization (although the estimates of its magnitude vary), it is likely that the monetary policy committee (MPC) would look at ways to spur demand.

Negative surprise on growth

One of the biggest impacts of demonetization has been on small and medium businesses, which are heavily dependent on cash transactions. As 86% of the currency by value was removed from the system overnight after the 8 November decision to withdraw Rs500 and Rs1,000 banknotes, economic growth is likely to slow in the third and fourth quarters of the current financial year. In the September quarter, GDP growth inched up slightly while private capital expenditure spending weakened significantly.

Foreign money flows out

Since 8 November, India has seen a significant outflow of foreign capital from the equity and debt markets. In November, over Rs2,600 crore worth of foreign equity investment and over Rs2,800 crore of debt investment flowed out of India. Volatility in the rupee has also meant that RBI’s foreign exchange reserves declined last month.

Markets factoring in a rate cut

Since the October monetary policy announcement, where the MPC agreed to reduce repo rates by 25 basis points (bps), the benchmark bond yields have declined by about 50 bps. One basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point. The fall in bond yields was even more rapid after 8 November, as the market expected government bonds to be in high demand as a liquidity management tool. Bond yields and prices move in opposite directions.

Interest rate cut today? 10 things to bear in mind

NEW DELHI: Today, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will make its first monetary policy review announcement since high value notes were scrapped on November 8. The announcement is expected at 2:30 pm. Here are 10 things to bear in mind ahead of the announcement.

1. Most analysts expect the RBI to cut the repo rate+ – rate at which it lends money to banks – by 25 basis points (bps) to six percent. If that happens, the interest rate will be the lowest it has been in six years.

2. Some analysts expect an even deeper 50 bps cut to combat the several cash crunch following the November 8 decision to scrap Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

3. The last rate cut was in October, when the RBI cut the repo rate by 25 to 6.25 per cent.

4. While the rate cut will raise concerns about inflation, analysts see the cut also as a “growth supportive stance to offset downside risks to growth from the demonetisation effort,” as Radhika Rao, an economist with DBS Bank, wrote in a note, according to Reuters.

5. A cut in the repo rate should ideally bring down banks’ borrowing costs, eventually leading to lower loan rates for companies and individuals.

6. Therefore, a rate cut is expected to help revive private investments in an atmosphere where short-term growth is likely to be impacted.

7. The country’s economy grew 7.3 percent between July and September+ , the fastest rate in the world for an economy of its size. November inflation was at 4%, which HDFC Bank termed “comfortable territory”.8. Brokerage firm Bank of America Merrill Lynch meanwhile cut its GDP growth forecast to 6.9 per cent from the earlier 7.7 per cent, saying that disruption to economic activity caused by demonetisation will be 0.3-0.5 per cent of GDP every month.
9. Merrill Lynch also said the RBI will now likely wait until April 2017 for the next rate cut.

10. Ahead of today’s rate cut announcement,
