Canada: Workers find live British cannonball in Quebec

Builders in the old part of the Canadian city of Quebec have unearthed a live cannonball fired by the British during a siege in 1759.

They posed for photos with the large, 90kg (200lb) projectile, unaware that it was still potentially explosive.

Army bomb disposal experts later collected the device, saying there was still a danger, CBC reports.

Quebec City archaeologist Serge Rouleau, who examined the munition before the army and noticed that it still contained a charge, said it was more an incendiary bomb than a cannonball, Le Soleil news site (in French) reports.

He had taken it home after the builders’ firm, Lafontaine Inc, contacted the municipal authorities.

“The ball would break and the powder would ignite, setting fire to the building,” Master Warrant Officer Sylvain Trudel, a senior munitions technician, was quoted by CBC as saying.

“With time, humidity got into its interior and reduced its potential for exploding, but there’s still a danger,” he added.

“Old munitions like this are hard to predict. You never know to what point the chemicals inside have degraded.”

The cannonball is now at a safe site and will either be disarmed or destroyed if necessary, CBC says.

It is believed it was fired at Quebec City from Levis, across the St Lawrence River, the broadcaster adds.

The Battle of the Plains of Abraham, part of the Seven Years’ War, ended in victory for the British, and was a major milestone towards the end of French rule in what is now Canada.

In episode 3, the on-screen couple were about to get their happy ending. Although King Joongjong refused to write a marriage proposal letter to Saimdang’s father, he was really impressed with young Lee Gyum’s choice. He even wrote a Chinese poem to Shin Myung-hwa as a token of gratitude.

But the story took an unexpected turn after the female lead visited a Buddha temple on a hill top. She was disturbed to see poor monks dying of hunger and decided to send a message to her lover through the helper.

On her way, Park Joon-myun’s character met Whieumdang Choi and handed over the letter to her. Since the female antagonist had a secret crush on the male protagonist, she was really excited to meet him. Towards the end of the episode, she came to know that he is in love with Saimdang.

The promo for episode 4 indicates that the secret message sent by Park Hye-soo’s character is the Chinese poem written by the King. It might get leaked and create chaos in the country, resulting in bloodshed and death.

Go behind the scenes now with Twitter’s Live 360 Video

Go behind the scenes now with Twitter’s Live 360 VideoMicro-blogging website Twitter – known for its 140-character tweets – launched Live 360 Video on Wednesday night in a bid to stay relevant in the live race among social media giants.

Live 360 Video lets viewers have an absolutely immersive experience when broadcasters and publishers go live to report news, cover exclusive events, document travels and tales, or run commentary pertaining to themed blogs.

Fans can also go behind the scenes with adored celebrities and famous personalities. The new feature helps viewers understand what’s happening behind the camera – literally – as Live 360 Video is enabled by attaching a secondary photo-video device below their primary phone.

According to Twitter’s official blog post, all users can view the new videos, but “only select partners can go live in 360 via Periscope.” Twitterati are also informed that the new feature can be recognized via the LIVE 360 symbol in videos, and can be used by either “moving your phone or swiping the screen.”

Given the investors’ continuing adverse sentiment related to Twitter’s stagnant user base and sluggish growth in Monthly Active Users (MAUs), the feature is a major plus for its future, as the company strives to add more value. Twitter has been criticized ever since current CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey took over from Dick Costolo.

Earlier this year, the website had come under limelight as numerous big names in the tech industry, such as Microsoft, Alphabet’s Google, and salesforce.com, allegedly eyed it as possible acquisition target, after the Window-maker purchased LinkedIn for $26 billion.

The Live concept is becoming progressively widespread, as various players in the social networking space contend to stay ahead of others, and garner more active users. This makes Twitter’s latest move a success strategy, likely to attract back the users it may have lost since 2015.

Food for thought now is that Twitter AR/VR director Alessandro Sabatelli announced the news on the website’s blog. Speculators can go wild thinking of how Live 360 Videos can tie in with augmented and virtual reality in the not-so-distant future.

Periscope, which was taken over by Twitter last year before its launch, also co-revealed the new feature, which is another step adding to its mantra that “[Periscope has] always said that joining a broadcast is like stepping into someone else’s shoes and seeing the world through their eyes.”

Some tech websites mentioned that Live 360 Video is not compatible with the Safari browser. However, the Periscope team joyously added in its Medium post, “When they smile, you’ll smile, and when they laugh, maybe you’ll laugh too.”

Enjoy the “first ever #Periscope360” in award-winning broadcaster Alex Pettitt’s tweet here:

New iOS 10.2 beta 2 features: new TV app with single sign-on, Siri live tune-In and more

New iOS 10.2 beta 2 features: new TV app with single sign-on, Siri live tune-In and more

A week after seeding the first iOS 10.2 beta test to developers, Apple Inc. has now seeded the second version.

The latest features for iOS 10.2 beta 2 include the new TV app, which the company introduced at its Oct. 27 event, as well as a TV widget. IOS 10.2 beta 2 also includes tweaks for Apple Music and a new SOS feature.

These new features join the various changes that were introduced last week with iOS 10.2 beta 1. They include the ability to preserve your camera settings, new emojis, a Videos widget, new wallpapers and full-screen animations.

If you are already part of the Apple Developer Program you can get the iOS 10.2 beta 2 as an over-the-air download. If you are part of the public beta program, the iOS 10.2 beta 2 will likely be available later this week. Apple plans for several of the new changes in iOS 10.2 to be available to the general public in December.

TV app

At Apple’s MacBook Pro event, the company also introduced a TV app that will allow users to discover and access TV shows and movies from multiple apps on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad. The TV app, which has been introduced with iOS 10.2 beta 2, also includes support for Single Sign-On, Live Tune-In with Siri and a Store where users can buy iTunes content, TV subscriptions and see recommendations.

The TV app stays in sync across your Apple TV, iPhone and iPad so you can start watching on one device and pick off where you left off on another.

Cable subscription – Single Sign-On

When iOS 10.2 beta 1 was seeded to developers last week, Apple introduced Single Sign-On for certain cable networks, allowing users to sign in once on their Apple TV, iPhone and iPad and get access to their pay-TV subscription content.

Single Sign-On is currently only supported for Dish Network, GVTC Communications, Hotwire and Sling TV.

To enable Single Sign-On, open the Settings app > TV Provider > select your provider > enter your username and password.

Tip: To disable Single Sign-On, open the Settings app > TV Provider > tap on your account name > tap Sign Out.

Live Tune-In with Siri

With the TV app you can use Siri to tune into live news and sporting events on Apple TV, allowing users to simply say “Watch the Stanford game” or “Which games are on right now?” In addition, Siri can provide live scores and take a viewer directly to the live stream of the game in the relevant app. Users will no longer need to navigate to the live stream within a specific app, for example, they can say “Watch CBS News” and Siri will direct them to CBS’ live stream.

TV widget

To coincide with the launch of the TV app, Apple has also introduced a TV app widget, which you can access from your Lock or Home screen by swiping right.

To add the TV widget tap Edit at the bottom of the widgets screen > find the TV widget > tap the ‘+’ green icon next to TV widget > tap the Done button in the top right.

Read our iOS 10 widgets article to learn more about adding, removing and completely disabling widgets on your iPhone and iPad.

SOS feature

Apple has introduced a new SOS feature that will automatically contact emergency service’s if a user presses their iPhone’s power button five times. At this stage, the SOS feature is available in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Russia and Spain.

To enable the SOS feature, open the Settings app > General > toggle the button next to “Click Sleep/Wake to Auto Call.” If you want a warning sound to play during the countdown to the emergency services’ call, you can also enable “Countdown Sound.”

Apple Music updates

In the first beta of iOS 10.2, Apple introduced new sorting features for Apple Music, allowing users to sort playlists by type, title, and recently added, as well as sort songs and albums by title or artist.

Apple Music has also received slight tweaks in the second beta of iOS 10.2 with the introduction of more prominent Shuffle and Repeat buttons.

Google Maps v9.39 adds a handy traffic widget and hints at live data about busy places [APK Teardown + Download]

Google Maps made it into the update cycle this week, bumping the version number up to 9.39. This update appears to be a bit lighter than many from the last few months, but it’s not completely lacking improvements. There’s a new shortcut that can be used to jump directly into the traffic screen. A quick teardown also reveals a potential improvement to the busyness chart on many locations. As always, we’ve got a link below to pick up the APK.

What’s New

Unofficial Changelog:

  • New traffic widget

Traffic widget

2016-10-14 17.39.292016-10-14 17.37.442016-10-14 17.39.15

Thanks to the millions of active smartphones roaming around the planet at any given time, Google is able to create a fairly accurate image of what traffic conditions are like. A few weeks back, Google added a new notification to warn users about potential traffic issues before they get on the road, linking it to a screen with a map with the current traffic situation. If that notification wasn’t quite timely enough, the new version of Maps introduces a more consistent way to get back to that screen at any time with a handy shortcut for your homescreen.

There are two ways to add the shortcut to your homescreen. To begin with, it’s located in the regular widget/shortcut list, so there’s no need to even open the Maps app to track it down, unlike the Timeline shortcut (for no obvious reason). If you end up on the traffic screen through the notification, you can also drag the card upward to find a suggestion to add the shortcut.

Teardown

Disclaimer: Teardowns are based on evidence found inside of apks (Android’s application package) and are necessarily speculative and usually based on incomplete information. It’s possible that the guesses made here are totally and completely wrong. Even when predictions are correct, there is always a chance that plans could change or may be canceled entirely. Much like rumors, nothing is certain until it’s officially announced and released. The features discussed below are probably not live yet, or may only be live for a small percentage of users. Unless stated otherwise, don’t expect to see these features if you install the apk.

Live busy-ness scale

2016-10-14 20.28.13nexus2cee_Screenshot_20160924-113543

Left: current view in Maps. Right: live data from dogfood version of Google Search.

The scale showing popular times can be a handy way to figure out if you’re about to walk into a restaurant or other public location and find it packed to the brim with people. However, the scale can occasionally be misleading, especially if there are special events, recent changes, or some other factor that’s either driving people to the same place, or possible away from it. If you’re really trying to judge how full a place is before walking in the door, you really need up-to-date information… And that’s exactly what Google Maps has in store.

<string name=”BUSYNESS_LIVE”>LIVE</string>

It’s really no surprise this feature is coming, the same thing recently turned up in a dogfood version of the web interface for Google Search. There’s not much to look at for evidence – just a single string – but as the screenshot above shows, it doesn’t take much to make the confirmation. The line is named busyness_live, which shares the same busyness prefix found in the other strings used with the popular times chart. It’s safe to assume the two charts will look the same, given that the two versions are generally identical.

Download

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.

LIVE! I’m sure she’s never been grabbed before: Trump on porn actress

Describing Pakistan as the “epicentre” of global terrorism, India has asked Pakistan to “set its own house in order” and take action against terror groups instead of “ritually” raking up human rights violations elsewhere.
India, exercising the right of reply after Pakistan raised the Kashmir issue during the general debate at the 135th Assembly Session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, asserted that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and will remain so for “eternity”.
“We deeply regret the misuse of this august body by Pakistan to make tendentious references about internal matters pertaining to the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir,” Lok Sabha MP R K Singh said.
“Let me make it very clear to Pakistan that the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and will remain so for eternity. The people of Jammu and Kashmir have been active participants in the democratic processes at both the central and state levels,” he said.
“Pakistan will be well-advised to focus its energies on setting its own house in order and acting against the perpetrators of terrorist attacks on its neighbours instead of ritually raking up alleged human rights violations elsewhere,” Singh said.
“Pakistan has raised the issue of UN Security Council resolutions. We would suggest Pakistan to first fulfil its primary obligation under the resolutions to vacate illegal occupation of Pakistan occupied Kashmir,” he said.
“We call upon Pakistan to stop inciting and supporting violence and terrorism in any part of India and refrain from meddling in our internal affairs in any matter,” Singh said.

00:34I’m sure she’s never been grabbed before: Trump on porn actress:

Donald Trump on Monday addressed the latest accusations of inappropriate sexual contact made against him, saying of the accuser, an adult film performer, “Oh, I’m sure she’s never been grabbed before.”
At a news conference Saturday, Jessica Drake accused Trump of grabbing and kissing her without permission and offering her money to go up to his hotel room alone a decade ago.
In an appearance on WGIR radio’s “New Hampshire Today,” Trump called the accusations against him “total fiction.”
“These are stories that are made up, these are total fiction. You’ll find out that, in the years to come, these women that stood up, it was all fiction,” he said.
“They were made up. I don’t know these women, it’s not my thing to do what they say. You know I don’t do that. I don’t grab them, as they say, on the arm.”
“One said, ‘he grabbed me on the arm.’ And she’s a porn star. You know, this one that came out recently, ‘he grabbed me and he grabbed me on the arm.’ Oh, I’m sure she’s never been grabbed before,” Trump said.

We’re Live Blogging the Final Debate of the 2016 Presidential Election

By normal standards, Trump was once again frenzied and hostile tonight. However, by Trump standards, he was surprisingly subdued. He had his moments, but not nearly as many as usual, and for most of the debate he managed to keep a level tone. I was joking about the Valium below, but I dunno. Maybe he really did get himself tranked before the debate.

I’m going to guess that the instant polls will show this one close to a draw. Maybe Clinton will come out a bit ahead. Basically, they both repeated the same attacks as they did in the first two debates, and they’ve lost some of their zest at this point. At about the 20-minute mark, Clinton started trying to bait Trump into melting down, but he generally resisted the temptation. Every time he started to get a little animated, it was like something blinked in his brain and he dialed himself back. He would have been more dangerous if he could have (a) dialed himself back even more, and (b) done this from the start.

Trump claimed, once again, that all the groping accusations are “pure fiction.” He never met any of those women. I guess that includes the People reporter, who he pretty clearly met many times. He also lied when he denied saying that he was OK with Japan having nuclear weapons. He lied again when he claimed, as usual, that he opposed the Iraq War.

In the news department, Trump was very clear that no, he would not necessarily accept the results of the election. “I will look at it at the time.,” he said. There’s just too much election fraud for him to commit to anything. This was by far the biggest actual news of the debate. On the other side of the aisle, Clinton said the Senate should confirm President Obama’s nominee to the Supreme Court. Has she said that before? Maybe so, but I don’t recall it. In any case, it was a very specific endorsement of Merrick Garland. Does that mean she’d renominate him if she wins?

Bottom line: by 2016 standards, this debate was a bit of a bore. It will have no effect on the election at all. However, Trump basically threatened to do—what? Well, something, anyway, if the election doesn’t go his way. This is not a normal threat for a presidential candidate to make, but luckily I doubt the election will be close enough for him to gin anything up. I also doubt that the Republican Party will back him up.

A complete transcript is here.

God in His infinite wisdom has declared that there should be ten commandments, nine forms of devotion, an eightfold path, seven deadly sins, six remembrances, five pillars of faith, four ages of man, and three presidential debates. Mere mortals can’t hope to comprehend why He would do this to us. Unless He’s a She and wants us all to get a good long look at Donald Trump and then get our act together. That’s probably it.

On with the show.

10:36 – And that’s a wrap. A real wrap.

10:35 – Clinton delivers standard rah rah. Trump draws picture of America falling into an abyss.

10:34 – Wallace: We all agreed not to have closing statements, but I’m going to ask you for one anyway.

10:33 – Clinton says she will raise Social Security taxes, but won’t cut benefits. She wants to expand benefits.

10:31 – Trump: I’m going to grow the economy so much that we’ll have no need for entitlement reform. Now he’s off on a rant on Obamacare. Trump says he’s glad that premiums are going up.

10:28 – Clinton: Donald criticized President Reagan in 1987!

10:27 – Let’s talk about the national debt. Why are both candidates ignoring it? Trump: I’ll get GDP growth up to 4%. Hell, maybe 5% or 6%. Why not? As soon as we get rid of the political hacks, anything is possible.

10:18 – Clinton: “You are unfit.” Trump: “No, you’re the one who’s unfit.” Ooh! What a sick burn. If you’re a first-grader, that is.

10:16 – Clinton calls out Trump for lying about his support for Iraq war. MentionsCelebrity Apprentice again.

10:14 – Trump now pretending he knows something about Mosul. Claims that ISIS leaders have already left because we announced attack three months ago. The whole battle is a sham to make Obama and Clinton look tough. The big winner will be Iran.

10:09 – Clinton: “This is very disturbing.” Whenever Trump loses something, he claims things have been rigged.

10:08 – Trump on Clinton: “She’s guilty of a very, very serious crime….She should never have been allowed to run for the presidency.”

10:06 – Will Trump accept the results of the election? Trump: “I will look at it at the time.”

10:05 – Trump is back on his schtick about how Hillary should have passed laws to stop him from doing all the sleazy stuff he does.

9:59 – Clinton (paraphrased): Trump is a creep. Trump: It was Clinton’s campaign that incited all the violence at his rallies.

9:57 – Trump on the groping accusations: “Those stories have been largely debunked.” I’m pretty sure the number that have been debunked is zero.

9:55 – Clinton: “Donald thinks belittling women makes him bigger.”

9:53 – Trump says he thinks the Clinton campaign got all those women to say he groped them. “It was all fiction.”

9:51 – Clinton: On the day I was in the Situation Room watching the raid on Osama bin Laden, Trump was hosting an episode of Celebrity Apprentice.

9:42 – Trump looks smug and congratulates Chris Wallace whenever he asks Clinton a tough question.

9:39 – Trump: “We’re going to do a lot of things about college tuition.” Like what? No telling, but it’ll be way better than Hillary’s lame tuition plan.

9:36 – Ah, excellent. The real Donald is back. He just denied saying he wouldn’t mind if Japan built its own nuclear weapons, even though he’s on tape saying exactly that.

9:34 – Trump interjects his first “Wrong.”

9:32 – Trump: No one knows where the WikiLeaks stuff came from. Clinton: Intelligence agencies say it was Russia. Trump, sarcastically: “Yeah yeah, I get it.”

9:31 – Trump starting to get a little more red-faced now.

9:29 – Are you in favor of open borders? Clinton: I was only talking about energy. And that all came from WikiLeaks anyway. Trump should denounce Russian espionage.

9:26 – Now Clinton is attacking Trump, hoping to bait him into melting down. It’s bound to work eventually, isn’t it? Not yet, though. Maybe he took a Valium before coming onstage?

9:25 – Clinton: Trump met with president of Mexico and didn’t bring up the wall “He choked and then got into a Twitter war.”

9:23 – Trump is against abortion, Clinton is pro-choice. Trump wants a wall, Clinton opposes a deportation force and favors comprehensive immigration reform.

9:16 – My, what a civil discussion so far!

9:13 – Now it’s all about protecting toddlers from guns. Clinton is considerably more moderate on gun control than she was during the primaries against Bernie Sanders.

9:10 – Trump: Court needs to uphold the 2nd Amendment. Oh, and all the other amendments too.

9:06 – Clinton: We need a court that respects women’s rights, LGBT rights, and opposes Citizens United. Court needs to stand up to the powerful. Senate should confirm Merrick Garland.

9:00 – Chris Wallace: No hootin’ and hollerin’!

8:55 – None of the presidential candidates sent me birthday greetings today, so I don’t know who I’m going to vote for now. This is a real lost opportunity for Gary Johnson and Jill Stein.
