What You Need to Know About Comodo’s DCV Changes

What You Need to Know About Comodo’s DCV Changes

Changes To Comodo’s Domain Validation Procedures Coming Next Week

Comodo will be improving their domain validation methods to meet new industry standards. This will result in small changes to how you validate your Comodo certificates, and will actually be a big improvement for those using file authentication.

Conceptually, these methods continue to work the same way. The implementations have just been tweaked slightly to comply with new industry standards and the end result is that the processes have actually gotten easier. Three cheers for security and simplicity!

The average user will not notice an impact to how you request and validate certificates besides a small tweak to the file path for file validation. But businesses that resell certificates or enterprises that automate deployment will want to consult the specific changes to make sure they are ready.

These changes take effect shortly – less than one week from today. Here is a quick summary of what’s changing so you can be prepared.

Validation Changes

Note that this only applies to Comodo. Symantec and Certum made similar changes earlier this year.

There are changes with two of the validation methods: File-based validation and CNAME (aka DNS) validation.

File Validation:

Things are getting much simpler. Before, there were different procedures depending on the type of certificate or the hostnames you wanted to protect.

Now there is just one rule. Place the file at the following path:

<domain.com>/.well-known/pki-validation/<MD5>.txt

Each certificate request will still receive a unique .txt file with a random-looking name (it’s really an MD5 hash of your request). Inside, the file will now contain a unique SHA-256 hash and comodoca.com in a separate line underneath.

CNAME Validation:

As before, you can create a specified CNAME record to validate ownership of your domain. This value will still be provided to you, and you will create it in your DNS manager the same way.

The specifics of the record will change, and this really only affects those that like to familiarize themselves with every detail. There will now be an underscore (“_”) before MD5 hash values and SHA256 hashes that are split into 32-character strings will now be used.

Here is an example of a new record:

_c7fbc2039e400c8ef74129ec7db1842c.<domain.com> CNAME c9c863405fe7675a3988b97664ea6baf.442019e4e52fa335f406f7c5f26cf14f.comodoca.com.

When Do I Need To Make These Changes

These changes will take effect next Thursday, July 20, 2017.

For “retail customers,” who purchase directly from Comodo or from a reseller like us, you will automatically start receiving the updated files and instructions. Because these files and CNAME values are prepared by Comodo, you may not even notice a difference.

Resellers, enterprise customers, and other high-volume certificate users will need to spend more time preparing.

If you use a plugin or API to purchase your Comodo certificates, check with your provider what (if any) update needs to be made so you can be compatible with the changes.

Our resellers and enterprise users can update anytime between now and the 20th, which is the deadline for the switch. New versions of the plugins and updated API calls and documentation are available here.

6 Bitcoin Apps You Need to Know About

top bitcoin appstop bitcoin apps

If you are a bitcoin enthusiast, there are a few bitcoin apps you need to know about, as they might come in handy. Whether you want to earn a few free satoshis playing games in your free time, or whether you want to constantly keep track of bitcoin’s price, there is an app out there that will take care of your needs. Here are a few examples:

6. CRYPTONATOR

This free app allows you to check conversion rates for over 500 different cryptocurrencies, in over 40 different exchanges. Essentially, Cryptonator makes it easy for users to find out how much cryptocurrencies people own are worth.

It also includes a portfolio tool that allows users to see how their selected coins perform over a specific period of time, as well a “winners & losers” section that shows which coins are doing good, and which aren’t.

5. BITCOIN TICKER WIDGET

Bitcoin Ticker Widget is exactly what it sounds like it is: a widget that gives you bitcoin’s price directly on your home screen. Widgets with the price of other cryptocurrencies can also be set up, showing conversion rates for a few different fiat currencies. The prices shown in the widgets are taken from some of the world’s top cryptocurrency exchanges, such as BTCC and Bitstamp.

4. BLOCKCHAIN GAME

If you want to introduce someone to bitcoin, you need to show them this game. Not only will it give you context to explain what blockchain technology is, but it will also help the other person earn a few satoshis and start playing around with bitcoin before they get serious about it. The game itself is pretty entertaining, and killing free time while earning bitcoin makes it a lot more enjoyable.

3. BITCOIN MAP

Bitcoin Map is a free app you can install on your smartphone that shows you where you can spend your bitcoins. This way you will be able to know whether the local burger joint accepts bitcoin or not. Even if you know every brick-and-mortar store accepting bitcoins in your area, the app may still come in handy when you decide to go for a road trip. There are other Bitcoin map apps out there, but most of them only give you the location of bitcoin ATMs, not actual brick-and-mortar stores accepting the cryptocurrency.

2. BLOCKFOLIO

Blockfolio is a free financial app aimed at cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Not only does it show price information for bitcoin and over 800 altcoins, it can be set to send the user a notification whenever a specific currency reaches a price threshold. Moreover, as if that insane number of altcoins wasn’t enough, it also features over 30 different fiat currencies so it can reach a global audience.

1. ZTRADER

zTrader is the trading client app every cryptocurrency trader needs. It features information from most major exchanges and can show in-depth analysis on different currencies, giving the user a great market overview. The app is pretty complex and gives users tons of information that can, at first, be overwhelming. It will, however, make traders’ lives easier.

The app features secure, encrypted storage of API keys, and even though it’s free to download, there is also a pro version.

4 Simple Blogging Platforms You Should Know About

you don’t already know, content marketing is one of the most affordable and effective means of getting your brand out there. And in an age where the internet is increasingly dominated by social networks, is it still worth it to launch a blog? The answer may vary, but some people believe social networks have made blogging stronger, because they deliver content to more people.

Nowadays, creating a blog is a really easy thing to do, as there are services for all tastes and objectives. In addition, today’s major platforms offer numerous features, giving users the options to provide any kind of service.

Among the many tips necessary to launch a successful blog, choosing the right platform is important. WordPress, Medium and other platforms are quite well-known, but there are several other free options you should know about. Check out these four simple to use, alternative blogging platforms that will improve your content marketing strategy:

Pancake.io

Very simple and straightforward, Pancake.io is powered by Dropbox. To use it, simply drop a Markdown-formatted content file into the Dropbox folder the app creates for your site. Those files can use .md, .txt or .markdown as an extension.

If you are not familiar with Markdown, the default template comes with demo content, so you can get the gist of it before you get started.

Commaful

Formerly known as Pencil, Commaful is a blogging platform clearly dedicated to the new generation of millennials. It makes the reading experience much easier and intuitive, as stories there are shown in slides with character count limits.

With these engaging visuals and easy to read format, Commaful is a great option for those who want to share short stories in a new and more visual way.

Postach.io

Dubbed “the easiest way to blog,” Postach.io is a truly innovative blogging platform. Built by the people behind Evernote, it heavily relies on this system to function – in fact, it lives on Evernote.

In order to use Postach.io, users simply need to have Evernote installed and connect a notebook to Postach.io’s platform. Then, any notes inside that notebook that have the tag “published” will be posted, right after Evernote is synced. Easy as 1-2-3.

Pen.io

Pen.io system is quite different from what we are used to. Its sign up requires no personal information at all – you just need to choose a URL and establish a password. With that, your own page on Pen.io is created. Unlike other platforms, each page is really a single page, as there no individual posts.

Every time you want to add a new “post”, simply update your page or create a new one. To update your page, just go to yoururl.pen.io/edit and make your changes. It supports images as well which, to be uploaded, can just be dragged to the page.

10 things you might not know about Apple’s AirPods

Apple fans, we have good news and bad news. The bad news is that if you want to get your hands on Apple’s hot new truly wireless earbuds anytime soon, it’s the same old story. You can either keep your eyes glued to one of several available AirPods inventory tracking websites, or you can pay a bit of a premium and order them on Amazon. The good news is that if you’re among the thousands upon thousands of people who have already managed to score a pair of AirPods, we’re going to show you some cool features that have been hiding under your nose — or rather, in your ears — this whole time.

You can pair AirPods with any Bluetooth device. Many people are under the impression that AirPods use special wireless technology enabled by Apple’s W1 chip, and they only work with iPhones and iPads. This is a classic example of Apple’s marketing magic sending the wrong message. The W1 is cool and it simplifies the pairing process with compatible Apple devices, but AirPods are Bluetooth headphones. That’s right, regular old Bluetooth headphones. They can be paired with any Bluetooth device.

You can see the AirPods’ remaining charge in Control Center. With your AirPods connected to your iPhone, swipe up from the bottom of any screen to open the Control Center, then swipe over to the music tab. Tap on your AirPods and you’ll see the remaining charge.

ap-cc

You can see the AirPods’ remaining charge on the battery widget. Add the battery widget to your iPhone’s widgets page and you’ll always be a tap and a swipe away from knowing exactly how much juice is left in your AirPods. If you don’t see them listed in the widget right after you add it to your widgets page, tap the “show more” link on the widget.

ap-bw

You can see remaining charge in your AirPods and your case by opening the case next to your iPhone. If you have an Apple device equipped with the W1 chip (iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus only, for now) you can see the remaining charge in your AirPods and the carrying case simply by opening the case next to your phone. You’ll then see a little pop up that looks like this:

ap-w1

You can see the AirPods’ remaining charge on your Apple Watch. Have an Apple Watch? As long as your AirPods are connected to your iPhone, you can see the remaining charge in your AirPods by swiping up from the bottom of your Watch’s home screen and then tapping the battery button.

ap-aw

You can rename your AirPods. Open the Settings app on your iPhone and then tap Bluetooth. Tap the “i” icon next to your AirPods while they’re connected, and then on the next page tap the “Name” field.

You can change the double-tap function on AirPods. On that same screen within the AirPods settings, you’ll see a section titled “double-tap on AirPods.” Beneath that, you can change the setting so that a double-tap on an AirPod will play/pause/answer/hang up instead of waking Siri. You can also turn double-tap off completely.

You can transfer voice calls from your iPhone to your AirPods automatically. One last time on the same screen in the Settings app, make sure “Automatic Ear Detection” is toggled to on. As long as it is, you can move a voice call from your iPhone to your AirPods simply by placing one of them in your ear.

You can adjust the volume on your AirPods using the Apple Watch’s digital crown. This is an awesome tip for AirPods users who also have an Apple Watch. Open the Music app on your Watch while music is streaming to your AirPods and you can increase or decrease the volume on your AirPods simply by twisting the digital crown in either direction.

No, the AirPods don’t feature contactless wireless charging. Apple’s AirPods design is fantastic, but there’s a misconception out there that the charging case features contactless wireless charging. Sadly, that’s simply not true. The metal tip at the bottom of each AirPod stem is more than just a sleek design feature. Those metal tips also touch charging contacts when the AirPods are seated in the case.

5 things to know about this week’s Chargers stadium news

e Oakland Raiders are in town but all anyone wants to talk about is off-the-field Chargers stadium news.

We’re here to catch you up.

1. There’s a new/old City Council proposal.

Four San Diego City Council members — Myrtle Cole, Scott Sherman, Chris Cate and Lorie Zapf — are offering to lease the Qualcomm Stadium site for $1 a year for 99 years in what they say could be a new starting point for negotiations; it’s a similar idea to one the Chargers floated in 2003 to redevelop the Qualcomm Stadium site in Mission Valley. The four council members wrote a letter about it and sent it to Chargers chairman Dean Spanos, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and many NFL owners. Spanos isn’t a fan.

2. There’s a new deal with the Rams … if the Chargers want it.

At the NFL owners meeting in Dallas on Wednesday, NFL owners approved an agreement between the L.A. Rams and the Chargers, in case the Bolts move to L.A. and share a stadium with the Rams, who just moved there too. Fellow NFL owners are cool with it. Observers eyeing the Rams’ reception in L.A.? Less so.

3. This is what NFL owners and the commissioner say.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says there’s no acceptable plan for the Chargers at the time being.

“There is not a stadium proposal on the table that we think addresses the long term issues of the clubs and the communities, so we need to continue to work at it,” Goodell said.

4. Chargers CEO Dean Spanos is on the clock.

The Chargers have until Jan. 15 to decide to take up the offer to join the Rams in L.A. Spanos is keeping his cards close to his chest.

5. Even with the Raiders in town, it’s all anyone can talk about.

So what will happen? Are the Chargers leaving? Time, it seems, will soon tell

10 Ways to Protect Your WordPress Site You Didn’t Know About

Do you own a WordPress site? Congratulations, the advanced security features of the platform will protect you for life…or so you’d like to think. Unlike ready SaaS solutions, online website builders with centralized managements, WordPress is a popular open-source CMS with open code with lots of security vulnerabilities. And believe me, these vulnerabilities can be easily used to bring harm to your website and business. You need to defend yourself, and the best way to do so is add reinforcements. I know what you’re thinking – plugins! However, plugins aren’t a 100 percent foolproof. In fact, it’s now being said that the more plugins, themes, and custom codes you add to your WordPress blog, the higher the likelihood of getting hacked. No, what you need to do is secure your site’s administrator. Betcha didn’t know about that! To know how to find out below.

Read: How to secure your cyber infrastructure from threats like ransomware?

Limit Plugin Usage

Try not be tempted by the various plugins available for WordPress. Install only the ones you think are indispensable. The more careful you are with your plugin choices, the more secure your site will be. Plugins not only hamper your security but affect the performance and speed of your site as well. Too many plugins can drastically slow down your WordPress site. Your best bet would be to consider plugins that combine multiple items on your must-have features list.

Premium Plugins for Free? No Thanks

We can understand the temptation to download and install free premium quality plugins when on a budget, but it’s best not to do so. Unless you purchase them from an official source, illegal versions of premium plugins generally contain malicious code. Not to mention the fact that piracy is illegal! So, the next time you spot premium plugins available for no cost, be very wary – what was once a good plugin with the excellent code has now become a hacker’s direct line into the backend of your website. Ask yourself – Are all these risks worth saving a few bucks?

Automatic Core Updates are a Must

You should update your WordPress installation as soon as a new version’s released. Older versions of WordPress have their security flaws listed all over the Internet. It won’t take long for a hacker to use that info, and mount an attack against your website. Make site maintenance a regular habit. Or, if you’re too lazy, you could always turn on automatic updates. This fulfills both your criteria of a hands-off approach and a secure website.

Automatic Updates for Themes and Plugins

Themes and plugins generally need to be updated manually. However, if you don’t schedule site maintenance regularly, configuring automatic updates might be the best way to stay on top of things without any immediate intervention.

Get Rid of the Theme and Plugin Editor

There are plenty of developers who make tweaks and changes to WP platform themes and plugins on a regular basis. This step is not meant for them. In the case of users who don’t use the built-in theme and plugin editor in the WordPress dashboard occasionally, it is better if the option is disabled. What does the editor have to do with security? Well, for starters, this editor is used by authorized WordPress users and if their accounts get hacked, the editor might be responsible for the downfall of the entire website. All this can be achieved with a few code modifications.

Remove PHP Error Reporting

The backend of your WP website is rife with weak spots and holes. Actually, very few sites aren’t. However, this does not excuse the fact that if a theme or plugin doesn’t function properly, an error message would be flashed across the screen. The problem stems from the fact that such error messages sometimes include your server path, the whole of which is visible in the error report. Thus, disabling error reporting is the best possible solution.

Never Put Author Usernames on Display

Never leave the WordPress defaults intact. It makes it very easy for hackers to find out your username, and since, more often than not, you are the administrator too, they get access to your admin username as well. This is never a good sign. Hackers can use even the smallest bit of info to compromise your site. The best course of action would be to hide the username of the author. Then if hackers try to get admin information, they’ll be directed back to the homepage.

Always Monitor the Activity on Your Dashboard

If your site has lots of visitors, you should always keep a close eye on what’s going on using your dashboard. It isn’t that all of them are up to no good, but sometimes when there’s too much activity on your site, it pays to be alert. The tiniest misstep can have huge repercussions. This is perhaps the reason why a lot of admins choose to log their dashboard activity – it enables them to retrace the user’s steps up till the point when the site broke down. The dashboard even gives you the opportunity to retrace your own steps.

Your security receives a much-needed boost as you can now connect the dots between a particular action and a particular reaction. Now if your site breaks down due to a certain file upload, you can investigate deeper to see if any malicious code was present or not.

It is possible that you might find the automated information log for WordPress difficult to use and cluttered. In that case, you can always go for a plugin that organizes all of the data.

Keep the Login Page Hidden

It’s true that hiding some elements of your page won’t deter hackers from accessing them, but at least you’ll put up one heck of a resistance. And that is always a good sign! You can rename or relocate your login page to confuse hackers. Most brute force attacks are automated, so when your login page is a little different than the norm, the impact of the attacks will be weaker. There are loads of plugins that can help you make such a simple change.

Update Your Computer

It’s often seen that despite the best security measures, hackers are accessing the WordPress site. This occurs due to vulnerabilities in the computer itself. Your only solution is to keep the system updated. Install software patches as soon as they are released. Upgrade to a newly released operating system as soon as possible.

The task of safeguarding your WordPress site involves a lot more than security plugin installation. You need to devise a complete strategy, taking even subtle nuances into consideration. We sometimes tend to overlook the smaller things, but these can make all the difference between good security and great security.

Did Russia really hack the U.S. election? Obama wants to know

d Russia really hack the election? President Barack Obama is planning to find out with a “full review” of any cyberattacking that occurred during the course of the 2016 presidential election.

He wants an answer by Jan. 20, the date President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn in.

“The president has directed the intelligence community to conduct a full review of what happened during the 2016 election process. It is to capture lessons learned from that and to report to a range of stakeholders,” White House Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Adviser Lisa Monaco said on Friday. “This is consistent with the work that we did over the summer to engage Congress on the threats that we were seeing.”

The news comes after repeated requests from House and Senate Democrats who feel left in the dark about information related to Russia’s alleged digital interference with the election.

Members of the House oversight and government reform committee even went so far as to send a letter to Obama and post it on Medium earlier this week asking Obama administration officials to brief Congress on any intelligence related to Russian efforts to influence the election.

“We are deeply concerned by Russian efforts to undermine, interfere with, and even influence the outcome of our election,” the Dec. 6 letter says. “This Russian malfeasance is not confined to us, but extends to our allies, our alliances and to democratic institutions around the world.”

They’ve been taking their mission to Twitter too.Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) even went on Periscope this week, saying “we owe it to the American people to make sure all future elections are free and fair and that they are free from outside interference.” He said he’s hoping to do this in a bipartisan way.

Seven Senate Democrats did the same thing, sending a letter to Obama asking for information concerning the Russian government’s involvement in the election be declassified.

Showing just how serious they are about taking action, Reps. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and Swalwell even introduced the Protecting our Democracy Act to establish a “National Commission on Foreign Interference in the 2016 Election.”

Some Senate Republicans have also expressed interest in launching a probe to investigate and Russian interference.

The White House has said there’s no evidence of any hacking with actual vote tallies, but Swalwell and others are continuing efforts in light of previous administration announcements which said “Russia’s senior-most officials could have authorized” attacks on the Democratic National Committee and other political organizations.

The Washington Post reported late Friday that the CIA has “concluded in a secret assessment that Russia intervened in the 2016 election to help Donald Trump win the presidency,” but the assessment has not been made public or shared widely in Congress.

Monaco said Congress will receive a report on what Obama’s review finds.

Some praised Obama’s action while others are more skeptical.Do you believe Russia could have been involved with attempts to hack the Democratic National Committee and other factors in the election?

You wouldn’t attempt to build a house with your bare hands, so why try to practice search engine optimization without the proper tools?

Fortunately, whether money is no object or free software is a must-have, there’s no shortage of SEO tools available to help. The trick is recognizing which ones are worth your time.

From content enrichment to technical analysis, the following are the premier tools of the trade for SEO heading into 2017.

Content

Content is the backbone of SEO. Content marketing leaders achieve annual website traffic growth of nearly eight times others, according to Aberdeen. What’s more, the Content Marketing Institute reported that although it costs significantly less than outbound marketing efforts, content marketing generates more than three times the leads.

In short, content is an SEO priority.

Free: EpicBeat is a data-driven platform that highlights content trends. In addition to seeing how many shares a post receives, it spotlights the number of comments generated.

Paid: BuzzSumo’s cheapest pricing option, $99 per month, offers the opportunity to see what content is most shared on social media. As with EpicBeat, this provides insight into specific topics and angles to increase engagement. You can create outreach lists based on people discussing your brand or topics relevant to your industry. You can also track your content’s performance on social networks, seeing who shared your content and when.

Searchmetrics makes selecting the right keywords easy.

Keywords

Quality of keywords has become more important than quantity, yet targeted words and phrases remain a valuable part of SEO strategy.

Free: Searchmetrics offers a free but limited version of its Essentials package that includes keyword research. This provides ranking and search volume information. You can also examine the demand and competition for specific keywords.

Paid: The paid version of SEMrush not only provides detailed analytics regarding the top keywords of your competitors, it also highlights which pages on competitor websites receive the most organic search engine traffic. In addition to packages ranging from $69.95 to $549.95, SEMrush offers custom plan creation.

Links

Moz has singled out external links as the most important search engine ranking factor. Capture them with the right SEO tools.

Free: The free version of Majestic shows you which websites are linking back to you and your competitors. This can make it easier to identify link-building opportunities, as well as ensure previously established external links are still functioning.

Paid: Starting at $24 a month, BuzzStream lets you research link-building possibilities, analyzing publisher and influencer metrics. You can also send outreach messages and manage ongoing link-building projects.

“External links have been singled out as the most important search engine ranking factor.”

Ranking

SEO is all about increasing the likelihood of your website ranking high on search engine results pages. Whether utilizing free SEO tools or paid options, it’s vital to know where your strengths and weaknesses lie.

Free: Google Search Console provides numerous free tools intended to help you measure the performance of your website. While keyword data is limited, you can easily see what words and phrases you’re currently ranking for.

Paid: Ranging from $41 monthly plans to custom pricing based on enterprise needs, you can analyze keyword strength based on domain, location and device with SERPs. You can also test SEO changes to your website to see how they affect ranking, informing you of any specific effect.

Audits

Website audits are routine to support SEO. It’s essential to analyze your site’s various components, from content to technical functionality.

Free: Screamingfrog’s free iteration offers up fast website audits that analyze everything from links to images similar to a web crawler. However, the crawl limit is set at 500 URLs.

Paid: Raven Tools provides both SEO technical analysis and online marketing tools starting at $27 a month. Its site auditor functionality shows precisely what SEO issues are interfering with ranking higher and attracting organic traffic. Additionally, its marketing platform allows for automating, scheduling and sending comprehensive marketing reports.

‘If people don’t go to jail for honour killing, how will they know it’s a crime?’

“How is this going down in your home country? You keep poking your lens where it’s least welcome,” CNN Chief International Correspondent Christiane Amanpour asks filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy during an interview on “Amanpour”.

“I think it’s very important to have these difficult conversations. We aren’t going to make the country a better place if we keep glorifying the good things about it. We must talk about issues that confront Pakistan ─ and there are many issues that confront the country,” Chinoy replies.

The filmmaker, who won an Oscar in 2012 for her documentary “Saving Face” which highlights the plight of acid attack survivors, is in the running for another golden statuette this year.

Her documentary on honour killing, “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness”, is one of five films to be nominated for an Oscar in the ‘Best Documentary ─ Short’ category at the 88th Academy Awards this year.

Chinoy’s critics have, in the past, taken issue with her highlighting what they call the ‘negative side’ of Pakistan. But she thinks “It’s very important to have these difficult conversations… It’s very important to shake the status quo.”

“The most hopeful thing about this film is that it started a national discourse in Pakistan about honour killings ─ something we desperately needed to have,” she says.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chinoy tells Amanpour, announced that his government “will introduce legislation as early as next week, talking about how honour killings need to be stopped, that there is no place for them in society”.

“He has said there is no place for honour killings in Islam… For a prime minister of Pakistan of Pakistan to make such statements sends a very positive signal. It doesn’t mean honour killings will end tomorrow but it does mean that the leadership is taking this very seriously and they will have laws that will counter it,” she says.

‘Nothing wrong with killing women’

But, Amanpour asks, even if PM Nawaz stands up for law and order and basic women’s rights, what about what happens in villages and homes? “It’s families taking the law into their own hands.”

Chinoy agrees. “Right now, as the law stands, when a father kills his daughter or a brother kills his sister, the family can forgive. The wife can forgive her husband, the parents can forgive their son, so very few people go to jail for honour killings in Pakistan.”

What that means, she says, is that in entire villages, towns and cities, people know of others who have killed women in their family and are walking free ─ Which gives the impression “that there is nothing wrong with killing women”, she says.

She stresses the need for a law that acts as a deterrent to the practice of honour killings. “We need to start sending people to jail, we need to start making examples of them,” she says. “If people don’t go to jail for it, how will they start thinking it is a serious crime?”

Saba’s story

“One day, I was reading a newspaper story about a girl who had been shot and thrown in a river in a gunny sack and survived in what appeared to be an attempted honour killing. I called up the hospital and arrived there… And right from the beginning, the girl was determined to fight. She was determined for her story to be told, because she said she didn’t want any other woman in Pakistan to go through what she went through.”

However, the existence of the law of forgiveness and pressure from the community has forced Saba to forgive her attackers.

“Her father is free from jail. [Due to] the loophole that exists in the law in Pakistan, the community forced Saba to forgive her father and uncle. They are walking free, but have given a guarantee that they will not harm her again. But she is lucky, because in many cases when the culprits walk free, they do come back and kill,” Chinoy says.

Saba, whose father and uncle tried to kill her for marrying a man of her choice ended up staying with her husband, but is still living near her parents.

“She did, indeed, get married to him. She’s had a son with him. She’s living with her in-laws right now in a home not far from where her parents live.”

Chinoy says Saba wants to raise her son to be someone who respects women.

“She said, “If the prime minister changes the law, I’m going to go to Islamabad to his office and thank him in person”.”
