Developers: A must-read to get your apps ready for Android O’s new shortcuts and widgets

Tapping and swiping can do so much more in Android O.

Google has showcased the new app and widget shortcuts coming in Android O on its blog, and while it’s a great explainer of how it all works it’s especially important for developers.

With Android O, users (that’s us!) will be able to long press an icon or portion of a widget and have access to specific shortcuts for an app. Examples are opening a blank or incognito page with Chrome, or composing an email with the Gmail app.

While these cool changes are part of Android O, they also require an app to support them. That means developers will have to update their apps, and that’s never fun.

Fortunately, the required changes aren’t a huge burden on developers, and Google makes things even easier with a full page in the documentation about pinning shortcuts and widgets — complete with code examples.

Android Developers: Pinning shortcuts and widgets

I love it when Google uses its developer blog this way. We get a small explainer and some insight on the new features while developers also get pointed to everything they need to implement them. It makes me look forward to Android O even more!

Google rolls out new warnings for G Suite and Apps Script

Google today started rolling out new warnings for G Suite and Apps Script to inform users about the potential dangers of new web apps. The company also plans to expand its verification process to existing apps “in the coming months.”

Although Google won’t say so explicitly, this is a response to the widespread “Google Docs” phishing email that affected many Google users in May. At the time, Google disabled the accounts responsible for abusing the OAuth authorization. A week later the company tightened the review process for web apps that request user data, and earlier this month it beefed up G Suite security with OAuth apps whitelisting. Now the company is preparing new warnings for unverified apps.

Starting today, G Suite users will see a new “unverified app” screen for new web applications and Apps Scripts that require verification. This interstitial precedes the permissions consent screen for the app and replaces the “error” page that developers of unverified web apps currently receive. The goal is to let potential users know that the app has yet to be verified in the hope of reducing the risk of user data being phished.

When users try to use an app that needs to be verified, they will be alerted after selecting their account, and then will be directed to the standard consent screen. A side benefit of this is that because the interstitial can be dismissed, developers can now test their applications without having to go through the OAuth client verification process (more information).

Starting this week, new Apps Scripts requesting OAuth access to data from consumers or from users in other domains will also see the above “unverified app” screen (documentation). Additionally, Apps Script users will also see new cautionary language reminding them to “consider whether you trust” an application before granting OAuth access, as well as a banner identifying web pages and forms created by other users.

Again, all of the above is for new apps. For existing apps, Google is recommending that developers verify their contact information is up to date because the company will getting in touch in the coming months. If you’re a developer, make sure the appropriate accounts are granted either the Project Owner or Billing Account Admin IAM role in the Google Cloud Console and that the OAuth Consent Screen configuration is correct in API Manager.

6 Bitcoin Apps You Need to Know About

top bitcoin appstop bitcoin apps

If you are a bitcoin enthusiast, there are a few bitcoin apps you need to know about, as they might come in handy. Whether you want to earn a few free satoshis playing games in your free time, or whether you want to constantly keep track of bitcoin’s price, there is an app out there that will take care of your needs. Here are a few examples:

6. CRYPTONATOR

This free app allows you to check conversion rates for over 500 different cryptocurrencies, in over 40 different exchanges. Essentially, Cryptonator makes it easy for users to find out how much cryptocurrencies people own are worth.

It also includes a portfolio tool that allows users to see how their selected coins perform over a specific period of time, as well a “winners & losers” section that shows which coins are doing good, and which aren’t.

5. BITCOIN TICKER WIDGET

Bitcoin Ticker Widget is exactly what it sounds like it is: a widget that gives you bitcoin’s price directly on your home screen. Widgets with the price of other cryptocurrencies can also be set up, showing conversion rates for a few different fiat currencies. The prices shown in the widgets are taken from some of the world’s top cryptocurrency exchanges, such as BTCC and Bitstamp.

4. BLOCKCHAIN GAME

If you want to introduce someone to bitcoin, you need to show them this game. Not only will it give you context to explain what blockchain technology is, but it will also help the other person earn a few satoshis and start playing around with bitcoin before they get serious about it. The game itself is pretty entertaining, and killing free time while earning bitcoin makes it a lot more enjoyable.

3. BITCOIN MAP

Bitcoin Map is a free app you can install on your smartphone that shows you where you can spend your bitcoins. This way you will be able to know whether the local burger joint accepts bitcoin or not. Even if you know every brick-and-mortar store accepting bitcoins in your area, the app may still come in handy when you decide to go for a road trip. There are other Bitcoin map apps out there, but most of them only give you the location of bitcoin ATMs, not actual brick-and-mortar stores accepting the cryptocurrency.

2. BLOCKFOLIO

Blockfolio is a free financial app aimed at cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Not only does it show price information for bitcoin and over 800 altcoins, it can be set to send the user a notification whenever a specific currency reaches a price threshold. Moreover, as if that insane number of altcoins wasn’t enough, it also features over 30 different fiat currencies so it can reach a global audience.

1. ZTRADER

zTrader is the trading client app every cryptocurrency trader needs. It features information from most major exchanges and can show in-depth analysis on different currencies, giving the user a great market overview. The app is pretty complex and gives users tons of information that can, at first, be overwhelming. It will, however, make traders’ lives easier.

The app features secure, encrypted storage of API keys, and even though it’s free to download, there is also a pro version.

Google and Progressive Web Apps: the mobile experience and SEO

Kashin / Shutterstock.com

As mobile usage increases and companies develop mobile-friendly sites to ensure the optimal user experience, developers are working hard to make the mobile web as efficient and useful as possible.

Last year, developers at Google created Progressive Web Apps, an interactive experience that has features of both a website and a mobile app. During a session at Google I/O 2016, Alex Russell, a software engineer at Google leading the project, stated that Progressive Web Apps “blur the line between Web content and apps, but they keep the strengths of the Web.”

Essentially, Progressive Web Apps allow for app-like user experience on a mobile browser. Users can interact with mobile web pages that have the look, feel and functionality of an app — including push notifications, offline accessibility, and the ability to add a shortcut to your device’s home screen — without having to visit an app store. And they don’t just work with Chrome, as other browsers are beginning to support Progressive Web Apps, as well.

Like any new technology, there are limitations and technical hurdles that can impact SEO performance. Here’s a closer look at how Progressive Web Apps work and how they affect SEO:

How Progressive Web Apps work

Progressive Web Apps (PWA) are designed with extremely fast load times and eliminate many of the steps required to access certain types of information or features directly from a website. They also have built-in intelligence that captures user behaviors and prefer

(Tran, who leads partnerships for the Google Chrome and Web platform, will be sharing further insights into this topic at our company’s event, Share16, later this month.)

Key benefits of Progressive Web Apps

PWAs offer a number of benefits over a traditional mobile-friendly site, including:

  • push notifications that allow the user to get a quick summary or snapshot of updates or messages instead of receiving an email update or waiting to log in to check;
  • offline functionality that allows the app to continue running in the background and “take notes” on the user’s behavior and activities without the user having to interact with the app directly;
  • highly responsive layout and easier navigation than the full desktop website on a mobile device;
  • all types of hardware access, including geolocation, camera and microphone and screen orientation access;
  • lower data usage, especially important for users in areas with slow or limited internet access; and
  • accessibility to all internet users, since the requirement to download the app or pay for the app is completely eliminated.

Does Google crawl PWA sites?

Progressive Web Apps make use of the flexibility of JavaScript, which means Google sees the single published page as a JavaScript site. A new URL may be created for the PWA, so the Googlebot will go ahead and crawl the page just like it would for any other page published on the web.

Google does crawl PWA sites just like it would crawl an AJAX or JavaScript site, but there are some issues that can potentially impact crawlability — so developers need to be aware of how to optimize the site to ensure the page gets indexed appropriately.

Google’s SEO recommendations for Progressive Web Apps

John Mueller of Google provided a detailed update on how Google handles PWAs and JavaScript sites in general back in March 2016.

In this post, he emphasizes the following:

  • Don’t cloak to Googlebot. It’s important that the developer uses the feature detection and progressive enhancement technique so all users have access to the content. It’s also not a good idea to redirect to an unsupported browser page.
  • Use rel=canonical when serving content from multiple URLs so that you aren’t guilty of duplicate content violations.
  • Avoid the AJAX-Crawling scheme on new sites.
  • Googlebot will not index URLs with “#” n them. Many Progressive Web Apps use the hash symbol in their URL structure, which means the search engines will drop everything beyond the #. The only way around this is to implement a URL structure using traditional SEO rules. This may be tricky for some sites and companies, but it’s a necessary step as we move forward.
  • Test to see how Googlebot sees the page. You can make use of Google Search Console’sFetch and Render tool to see your site exactly the way Google sees it.
  • Make sure required resources aren’t blocked by robots.txt.
  • Reduce the number of embedded resources in the page (especially the number of JavaScript files required to render the page), since these might not be fully loaded.
  • Use an accurate sitemap file to signal any changes to your website when using Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP).
  • Remember that some search engines and web service providers accessing content may not support JavaScript or might support a different subset.

Conclusion

Progressive Web Apps are the next generation of online interactivity, and they provide a whole new user experience. Companies that develop these app-like interfaces for their users need to be aware of the inherent limitations of the page being indexed by Google and make sure they are coding correctly. Progressive Web Apps can complement an existing website but may not hold much weight independently.

In terms of SEO, it is still up to the company to develop a strong online presence with their existing website using best SEO practices so that users looking for information can find the site or brand easily. From there, the user can decide whether they want to use a PWA or stick with the traditional desktop and mobile version of the site to complete their session.

ences so the app can deliver a more personalized experience.

These apps can be accessed from a browser tab and do not require any installation or downloads — the user can “build a relationship” with the app by interacting with it often and storing personal data. In return, the app will send push notifications for easy re-engagement. When a Progressive Web App is published online, it is completely linkable and deployed to a host that supports HTTPS. The app will work when the user is online or offline, using the data that was cached when the user was previously online.

In many cases, the mobile version of the website becomes the PWA itself since it allows for a condensed user experience on any type of screen with a variety of features accessible with a screen tap, swipe, or mouse click.

During the opening keynote of Google’s Progressive Web App Summit 2016 in Amsterdam, Thao Tran from Google emphasized that every company will take its own path when building Progressive Web Apps. You can see the whole keynote below.

Holiday Apps

Holiday Apps

The holidays come and go so quickly and we’re often left wondering why we spent so much time trying to stay organized or stressed. Although we’ve all survived the holidays long before smartphones were invented, these apps might make you feel like you got through the holiday just a bit easier:

Holiday Shopping

Last minute or not, holiday shopping can be a less than pleasant experience. While online shopping is popular for convenience, shipping can be a hassle and returns can be even more of a mess. Check out these apps to make shopping a little more bearable:

  • Gifster: Are you tired of buying gifts that you know will be returned right after the holidays? Don’t want to even guess what to buy your teenage nephew or your picky aunt? This wishlist app allows family and friends to share some ideas, favorite colors and sizes in particular items. Gifster takes the guesswork out of shopping.

  • Pounce: How many times have you looked through Sunday’s holiday flyers, dog eared or tore out a page and then ended up accidentally tossing it out or hide it from the kids (never to be found by anyone, including you)? With Pounce all you need to do is take a picture of an item you want, scan it in the app, and order it online; it’s way easier than taking your bundle of ripped out catalog and flyer pages to the store with you.

  • RedLaser: Want to make sure you’re getting the best deal, but don’t want to store hop all over town? With RedLaser, you can scan an item’s barcode and the app will tell you if and where you can find it cheaper (at another store or online). RedLaser also helps you stay organized by keeping track of everything you looked up so you can focus on other things rather than trying to remember all the random gift ideas.

  • Find My Car: After a long day of shopping, it’s easy to forget where you parked your car. Be honest, after awhile, all parking lots and parking ramps start to look the same. With the Find My Car app, you pin your location right after you park. Like other map apps, Find My Car will lead the way to your car, where you can unload the day’s purchases.

Holiday Airline Travel

Air travel is an easy, busy, and sometimes stressful way to get home for the holidays. Let these apps help you out:

  • PackPoint: Your mom doesn’t pack for your trips anymore, now that you’re grown up and you may be one of the many people who overpack. Remember, you’ll need space for presents. Packpoint will tell you what to pack when you enter the length of travel, any planned activities, and the forecast at your destination. You’ll have to double check your packing, but at least this app will help you get a little more organized.

  • LoungeBuddy: This app may come in handy if you’re in an unfamiliar airport and need to hangout longer than you expected. LoungeBuddy will tell you what lounges are available so you can hangout somewhere other than on the floor.

Bonus: Don’t forget about the kid in you or if you need to get your overly excited kid to fall asleep? The Kringl app gives kids a chance to take a good look at the one and only big man in a red suit.

Grammarly

This is a great resource for anyone who wants to catch those common grammar errors and get suggestions for stronger vocabulary substitutions.

Features include:

  • Word choice suggestions
  • Plagiarism proofing
  • Detection of 250+ grammatical errors
  • Contextual spell-check

A basic version is free, but premium plans start at $29.95/month.

Hemingway

Want to write strong, simple sentences like Hemingway? You can.

The free Hemingway app “makes your writing bold and clear” by highlighting potential edits. Different colors help you spot sentences that are too long or too dense, complex words, adverbs that can be eliminated, and places where you’re incorrectly using passive voice. By writing within the Hemingway app, you can pare down your ideas to their most concise form.

Airstory is an outlining tool for writers who want to plan their stories within a simple drag-and-drop tool. Using Airstory, you can create searchable, taggable cards that you then organize and drop into an outline, complete with headings, subheadings, and more.

OneLook Reverse Dictionary

For those moments when you have a word on the tip of your tongue (but can’t for the life of you think of it), there’s the free OneLook Reverse Dictionary. You type the concept into the search bar, and it generates a list of words and phrases that match your query.

Using this tool, you can:

  • Explore similar concepts
  • Answer basic questions
  • Find words for which you only know the definition
  • Generate lists of words in a category

You’ll never waste another minute thinking, “What is the word for that?”

Write with Confidence
