6 Bitcoin Apps You Need to Know About

top bitcoin appstop bitcoin apps

If you are a bitcoin enthusiast, there are a few bitcoin apps you need to know about, as they might come in handy. Whether you want to earn a few free satoshis playing games in your free time, or whether you want to constantly keep track of bitcoin’s price, there is an app out there that will take care of your needs. Here are a few examples:

This free app allows you to check conversion rates for over 500 different cryptocurrencies, in over 40 different exchanges. Essentially, Cryptonator makes it easy for users to find out how much cryptocurrencies people own are worth.

It also includes a portfolio tool that allows users to see how their selected coins perform over a specific period of time, as well a “winners & losers” section that shows which coins are doing good, and which aren’t.

Bitcoin Ticker Widget is exactly what it sounds like it is: a widget that gives you bitcoin’s price directly on your home screen. Widgets with the price of other cryptocurrencies can also be set up, showing conversion rates for a few different fiat currencies. The prices shown in the widgets are taken from some of the world’s top cryptocurrency exchanges, such as BTCC and Bitstamp.

If you want to introduce someone to bitcoin, you need to show them this game. Not only will it give you context to explain what blockchain technology is, but it will also help the other person earn a few satoshis and start playing around with bitcoin before they get serious about it. The game itself is pretty entertaining, and killing free time while earning bitcoin makes it a lot more enjoyable.

Bitcoin Map is a free app you can install on your smartphone that shows you where you can spend your bitcoins. This way you will be able to know whether the local burger joint accepts bitcoin or not. Even if you know every brick-and-mortar store accepting bitcoins in your area, the app may still come in handy when you decide to go for a road trip. There are other Bitcoin map apps out there, but most of them only give you the location of bitcoin ATMs, not actual brick-and-mortar stores accepting the cryptocurrency.

Blockfolio is a free financial app aimed at cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Not only does it show price information for bitcoin and over 800 altcoins, it can be set to send the user a notification whenever a specific currency reaches a price threshold. Moreover, as if that insane number of altcoins wasn’t enough, it also features over 30 different fiat currencies so it can reach a global audience.

zTrader is the trading client app every cryptocurrency trader needs. It features information from most major exchanges and can show in-depth analysis on different currencies, giving the user a great market overview. The app is pretty complex and gives users tons of information that can, at first, be overwhelming. It will, however, make traders’ lives easier.

The app features secure, encrypted storage of API keys, and even though it’s free to download, there is also a pro version.

What’s Next For Cowboys Ezekiel Elliott? How About 2,000 Yards?

Over the next couple months there will be extensive discussions about who the Cowboys first round pick should be. The front office has been lights-out fantastic when it comes to their first-round selections with five of their last seven picks being All Pro players. And two of those All Pros have been selected in the last three drafts and achieved their All Pro status their rookie seasons. Zack Martin accomplished this in 2014 and then Ezekiel Elliott did it again last season. Being rookie standouts aren’t the only similarity between these two. Both picks came with a lot of criticism as draft pundits had different players penciled in for the Cowboys when their spot came up. Last season, the great debate centered around two remarkable collegiate athletes – Zeke and Jalen Ramsey.

The Cowboys finally ended the suspense on draft day by selecting the Ohio State running back sensation with the fourth-overall pick. And they haven’t looked back since.

Elliott was a remarkable choice. While it wasn’t hard to see how talented he was, it was exhilarating to watch him put in on display within the Cowboys offense. Elliott broke franchise rookie records left and right. In just his first season, he finished with the fifth-highest rushing output of any Cowboys player with 1,631 yards. And he scored the fourth-most rushing touchdowns in Cowboys history with 15. Only the great touchdown magpie, Emmitt Smith, had seasons with more. And he’s just getting started.

Recently, WFAA sat down and talked to Zeke’s mother and asked her how does he build on such an incredible start? Her response…

Silly moms and their outlandish predictions. Only this declaration doesn’t seem that absurd. Let’s do some quick math here.

Zeke averaged 5.1 yards per carry last season. If you couple that per carry production with the same workload that DeMarco Murray got in 2014, Elliott would finish with 1,999 yards on the season. Of course, it would be highly unlikely to see him getting his tape cut in Week 17 if he is close to eclipsing such an incredible mark.

Elliott’s rookie totals would have been higher had he played in the regular season finale. They also would have been higher if he didn’t get off to a slow start. Yes, he was still a rookie and had to learn some patience and build chemistry with his offensive line. During the first two games of his career, he only averaged 67 yards. But once he started allowing the holes to open up and found the creases, he went on a tear. Over the next four games he averaged over 140 yards per game.

Expect more big games from Elliott in 2017 versus games where he will be shut down. To reach the 2,000 yard mark, he’ll need to rush for an average of 125 yards a game. He has the skill to make the big runs and he will certainly have plenty of opportunities. The Cowboys offense had the most rushing attempts of any team in the league last season and they will continue to be a run-heavy team. Don’t expect that to change any time soon.

As talented as Elliott is, one of the most exciting things about him is his drive. Instilled in him as a child, he loves to compete. Both his parents were extremely athletic, including his mother who was a track star. His parents were committed to his education and has exhibited great family values as they helped him reach his athletic goals. In just watching the above video, you can see why this kid has so much fire in him and is so dedicated to his craft. He’s got big plans.

There’s no denying that Zeke can be a goofball. He showed up to the draft in a crop top, he jumped in the kettle, he chased down a crazed fan at the Pro Bowl, and he regularly reminds those watching that he needs the ball with his “feed me” gesture. But as much fun as he loves to have, he’s has an overwhelming desire to compete. Just ask his coach.Zeke’s getting to 2,000 yards. Whether it happens in 2017 or the year after, it’s coming. His mother said so and that’s good enough for me. Never question a women’s intuition.

Oracle Warns Developers About The End Of Java Plugins, Urges To Look For Alternatives

Oracle Is Giving High School A Make OverOracle this week issued a dire warning to developers, who still expect browsers to run code developed for Java plugins, to find an alternative. The software company is urging developers to find replacement solutions if they still use Java applets because Firefox is going to stop supporting them.

Java Browser Plugin Will Be Deprecated Soon

In a recent Oracle blog post, the Redwood City-based company announced that starting with Mozilla Firefox 52, which is set for release next month, the 32-bit version of the browser will no longer provide the requisite APIs for standards-based plugin support.

The software company announced in a recently published Oracle whitepaper last year, that supporting Java plugins in web browsers is only possible for as long as the vendors are committed to supporting standards-based plugins. Unfortunately, things are getting hard now for the plugins.

According to The Register, the developers behind all major browsers have just decided that the NPAPI framework may now come to rest, that is because there are now better and alternative ways to do multimedia stuff inside a web browser.

Google Chrome ditched plugins in 2015, followed by Microsoft IE and then, the Opera and Apple Safari. This means only one thing: the clock is ticking now for the plugins and there’s no effective way to stop it.

Oracle Urges Developers To Look For Alternatives

In a recent Oracle blog post, the software company advises developers to quickly find a different solution if they are still using the aging Java applets. Mozilla Firefox 52 will be on ESR (Extended Support Release) and will include NPAPI plugin support on board and will get a new release every six weeks or so.

But once Firefox support has reached its expiration date, which will be on 2018, it will be the end of the world for the Java browser plugins.

All about Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl show

Lady Gaga performs at half-time show at NRG Stadium, Houston, Texas. Photo: 5 February 2017

First things first: is Lady Gaga OK? She was last seen dropping the mic, grabbing a flying football and seemingly jumping into a deep pit.

That all came at the end of 13 minutes of frantic action that started on the roof of a stadium in Houston, saw her plummet down to ground level before apparently running a few kilometres. All while singing, and fitting in one costume change. Not bad.

The consensus was that Lady Gaga nailed it – it being the half-time show of the Super Bowl, the big date in any American football fan’s diary.

In doing so, she followed such names as the Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson and Beyonce (more on her later.)

But there was one big question before the game: how political would her show be? So, naturally, our first question is:

How political was her show?

In the past, Lady Gaga has not been shy in addressing the questions that matter most to her, most notably LGBTQ issues.

The show took place barely two weeks since the inauguration of Donald Trump, who is reported to have been preparing an executive order rolling back LGBTQ rights.

And given that her show came a year after Beyonce’s blistering, politically-charged half-time show, all the expectations were that Gaga’s show would be a platform for some sort of pointed message.

Image captionLady Gaga did some acrobatics, before dropping her mic and disappearing somewhere in a pit

So in the end, it was perhaps a bit of a surprise that there was not a more explicit message delivered.

It was what she had promised, to be fair.

“The only statements that I’ll be making during the half-time show are the ones that I’ve been consistently making throughout my career,” she had said. And so it proved.

There were no dancers dressed as Black Panthers, a la Beyonce.

But we did get a brief introduction incorporating the lyrics of Woody Guthrie “This land is your land/This land is my land” and the Pledge of Allegiance “One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

To those seeking a political statement from Lady Gaga, it did the job. And it will have appeared purely as a patriotic message to everyone else. So win-win.

But one moment did stand out for those watching – one of the six songs she delivered was a message to all those who feel excluded, Born This Way.

“No matter gay, straight or bi/Lesbian, transgendered life/I’m on the right track baby/I was born to survive.”

Tyler Oakley's tweetImage copyrightTWITTER
Cole Ledford's tweetImage copyrightTWITTER

(It may not have been a coincidence that this song was chosen, given the presence in the stadium of Vice-President Mike Pence, a bete noire of the LGBTQ movement).

So, did Lady Gaga perform a Satanic ritual?

Apparently not.

In the build-up to the Super Bowl, this was a legitimate concern of the right-wing organisation Infowars.

There were no immediate reports by Houston Police of Satanic activity on Sunday night.

What about the adverts?

Well, this is one place where there was an unmistakable message, on a weekend in which a ban on new arrivals to the US from seven Muslim-majority nations was blocked by a judge.

That message was: “We’re all one nation together, and we respect where people come from and the journey they took to get here.”

This was most obvious in the advert by Airbnb showing people of different colours under the hashtag #weaccept – an ad apparently produced in only a few days last week.

“We believe no matter who you are, where you’re from, who you love or who you worship, we all belong,” the advert said. “The world is more beautiful the more you accept.”

The company, which has been attacked in the past for not being inclusive enough, went on to announce a programme to support refugees.

It was obvious too, in the advert for a lumber company showing the journey made by a family from Central America to the States (a longer version posted online shows them arriving at a huge wall, only to find someone had built a door into it).

84 Lumber Company's tweetImage copyrightTWITTER

And it was obvious too in the advert by a leading beer company showing the (no doubt fictionalised) struggle its founder had in moving to the US.

All reports in Florida, where Mr Trump was on a brief trip, indicate he did not watch the whole match. He did not tweet his opinion of Lady Gaga’s show.

So who won?

The team in white from Boston beat the one in red from Atlanta, but only after the first overtime in Super Bowl history.

4 Simple Blogging Platforms You Should Know About

you don’t already know, content marketing is one of the most affordable and effective means of getting your brand out there. And in an age where the internet is increasingly dominated by social networks, is it still worth it to launch a blog? The answer may vary, but some people believe social networks have made blogging stronger, because they deliver content to more people.

Nowadays, creating a blog is a really easy thing to do, as there are services for all tastes and objectives. In addition, today’s major platforms offer numerous features, giving users the options to provide any kind of service.

Among the many tips necessary to launch a successful blog, choosing the right platform is important. WordPress, Medium and other platforms are quite well-known, but there are several other free options you should know about. Check out these four simple to use, alternative blogging platforms that will improve your content marketing strategy:

Very simple and straightforward, Pancake.io is powered by Dropbox. To use it, simply drop a Markdown-formatted content file into the Dropbox folder the app creates for your site. Those files can use .md, .txt or .markdown as an extension.

If you are not familiar with Markdown, the default template comes with demo content, so you can get the gist of it before you get started.

Formerly known as Pencil, Commaful is a blogging platform clearly dedicated to the new generation of millennials. It makes the reading experience much easier and intuitive, as stories there are shown in slides with character count limits.

With these engaging visuals and easy to read format, Commaful is a great option for those who want to share short stories in a new and more visual way.

Dubbed “the easiest way to blog,” Postach.io is a truly innovative blogging platform. Built by the people behind Evernote, it heavily relies on this system to function – in fact, it lives on Evernote.

In order to use Postach.io, users simply need to have Evernote installed and connect a notebook to Postach.io’s platform. Then, any notes inside that notebook that have the tag “published” will be posted, right after Evernote is synced. Easy as 1-2-3.

Pen.io system is quite different from what we are used to. Its sign up requires no personal information at all – you just need to choose a URL and establish a password. With that, your own page on Pen.io is created. Unlike other platforms, each page is really a single page, as there no individual posts.

Every time you want to add a new “post”, simply update your page or create a new one. To update your page, just go to yoururl.pen.io/edit and make your changes. It supports images as well which, to be uploaded, can just be dragged to the page.

10 things you might not know about Apple’s AirPods

Apple fans, we have good news and bad news. The bad news is that if you want to get your hands on Apple’s hot new truly wireless earbuds anytime soon, it’s the same old story. You can either keep your eyes glued to one of several available AirPods inventory tracking websites, or you can pay a bit of a premium and order them on Amazon. The good news is that if you’re among the thousands upon thousands of people who have already managed to score a pair of AirPods, we’re going to show you some cool features that have been hiding under your nose — or rather, in your ears — this whole time.

You can pair AirPods with any Bluetooth device. Many people are under the impression that AirPods use special wireless technology enabled by Apple’s W1 chip, and they only work with iPhones and iPads. This is a classic example of Apple’s marketing magic sending the wrong message. The W1 is cool and it simplifies the pairing process with compatible Apple devices, but AirPods are Bluetooth headphones. That’s right, regular old Bluetooth headphones. They can be paired with any Bluetooth device.

You can see the AirPods’ remaining charge in Control Center. With your AirPods connected to your iPhone, swipe up from the bottom of any screen to open the Control Center, then swipe over to the music tab. Tap on your AirPods and you’ll see the remaining charge.

You can see the AirPods’ remaining charge on the battery widget. Add the battery widget to your iPhone’s widgets page and you’ll always be a tap and a swipe away from knowing exactly how much juice is left in your AirPods. If you don’t see them listed in the widget right after you add it to your widgets page, tap the “show more” link on the widget.

You can see remaining charge in your AirPods and your case by opening the case next to your iPhone. If you have an Apple device equipped with the W1 chip (iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus only, for now) you can see the remaining charge in your AirPods and the carrying case simply by opening the case next to your phone. You’ll then see a little pop up that looks like this:

You can see the AirPods’ remaining charge on your Apple Watch. Have an Apple Watch? As long as your AirPods are connected to your iPhone, you can see the remaining charge in your AirPods by swiping up from the bottom of your Watch’s home screen and then tapping the battery button.

You can rename your AirPods. Open the Settings app on your iPhone and then tap Bluetooth. Tap the “i” icon next to your AirPods while they’re connected, and then on the next page tap the “Name” field.

You can change the double-tap function on AirPods. On that same screen within the AirPods settings, you’ll see a section titled “double-tap on AirPods.” Beneath that, you can change the setting so that a double-tap on an AirPod will play/pause/answer/hang up instead of waking Siri. You can also turn double-tap off completely.

You can transfer voice calls from your iPhone to your AirPods automatically. One last time on the same screen in the Settings app, make sure “Automatic Ear Detection” is toggled to on. As long as it is, you can move a voice call from your iPhone to your AirPods simply by placing one of them in your ear.

You can adjust the volume on your AirPods using the Apple Watch’s digital crown. This is an awesome tip for AirPods users who also have an Apple Watch. Open the Music app on your Watch while music is streaming to your AirPods and you can increase or decrease the volume on your AirPods simply by twisting the digital crown in either direction.

No, the AirPods don’t feature contactless wireless charging. Apple’s AirPods design is fantastic, but there’s a misconception out there that the charging case features contactless wireless charging. Sadly, that’s simply not true. The metal tip at the bottom of each AirPod stem is more than just a sleek design feature. Those metal tips also touch charging contacts when the AirPods are seated in the case.

5 things to know about this week’s Chargers stadium news

e Oakland Raiders are in town but all anyone wants to talk about is off-the-field Chargers stadium news.

We’re here to catch you up.

1. There’s a new/old City Council proposal.

Four San Diego City Council members — Myrtle Cole, Scott Sherman, Chris Cate and Lorie Zapf — are offering to lease the Qualcomm Stadium site for $1 a year for 99 years in what they say could be a new starting point for negotiations; it’s a similar idea to one the Chargers floated in 2003 to redevelop the Qualcomm Stadium site in Mission Valley. The four council members wrote a letter about it and sent it to Chargers chairman Dean Spanos, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and many NFL owners. Spanos isn’t a fan.

2. There’s a new deal with the Rams … if the Chargers want it.

At the NFL owners meeting in Dallas on Wednesday, NFL owners approved an agreement between the L.A. Rams and the Chargers, in case the Bolts move to L.A. and share a stadium with the Rams, who just moved there too. Fellow NFL owners are cool with it. Observers eyeing the Rams’ reception in L.A.? Less so.

3. This is what NFL owners and the commissioner say.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says there’s no acceptable plan for the Chargers at the time being.

“There is not a stadium proposal on the table that we think addresses the long term issues of the clubs and the communities, so we need to continue to work at it,” Goodell said.

4. Chargers CEO Dean Spanos is on the clock.

The Chargers have until Jan. 15 to decide to take up the offer to join the Rams in L.A. Spanos is keeping his cards close to his chest.

5. Even with the Raiders in town, it’s all anyone can talk about.

So what will happen? Are the Chargers leaving? Time, it seems, will soon tell

10 Ways to Protect Your WordPress Site You Didn’t Know About

Do you own a WordPress site? Congratulations, the advanced security features of the platform will protect you for life…or so you’d like to think. Unlike ready SaaS solutions, online website builders with centralized managements, WordPress is a popular open-source CMS with open code with lots of security vulnerabilities. And believe me, these vulnerabilities can be easily used to bring harm to your website and business. You need to defend yourself, and the best way to do so is add reinforcements. I know what you’re thinking – plugins! However, plugins aren’t a 100 percent foolproof. In fact, it’s now being said that the more plugins, themes, and custom codes you add to your WordPress blog, the higher the likelihood of getting hacked. No, what you need to do is secure your site’s administrator. Betcha didn’t know about that! To know how to find out below.

Read: How to secure your cyber infrastructure from threats like ransomware?

Limit Plugin Usage

Try not be tempted by the various plugins available for WordPress. Install only the ones you think are indispensable. The more careful you are with your plugin choices, the more secure your site will be. Plugins not only hamper your security but affect the performance and speed of your site as well. Too many plugins can drastically slow down your WordPress site. Your best bet would be to consider plugins that combine multiple items on your must-have features list.

Premium Plugins for Free? No Thanks

We can understand the temptation to download and install free premium quality plugins when on a budget, but it’s best not to do so. Unless you purchase them from an official source, illegal versions of premium plugins generally contain malicious code. Not to mention the fact that piracy is illegal! So, the next time you spot premium plugins available for no cost, be very wary – what was once a good plugin with the excellent code has now become a hacker’s direct line into the backend of your website. Ask yourself – Are all these risks worth saving a few bucks?

Automatic Core Updates are a Must

You should update your WordPress installation as soon as a new version’s released. Older versions of WordPress have their security flaws listed all over the Internet. It won’t take long for a hacker to use that info, and mount an attack against your website. Make site maintenance a regular habit. Or, if you’re too lazy, you could always turn on automatic updates. This fulfills both your criteria of a hands-off approach and a secure website.

Automatic Updates for Themes and Plugins

Themes and plugins generally need to be updated manually. However, if you don’t schedule site maintenance regularly, configuring automatic updates might be the best way to stay on top of things without any immediate intervention.

Get Rid of the Theme and Plugin Editor

There are plenty of developers who make tweaks and changes to WP platform themes and plugins on a regular basis. This step is not meant for them. In the case of users who don’t use the built-in theme and plugin editor in the WordPress dashboard occasionally, it is better if the option is disabled. What does the editor have to do with security? Well, for starters, this editor is used by authorized WordPress users and if their accounts get hacked, the editor might be responsible for the downfall of the entire website. All this can be achieved with a few code modifications.

Remove PHP Error Reporting

The backend of your WP website is rife with weak spots and holes. Actually, very few sites aren’t. However, this does not excuse the fact that if a theme or plugin doesn’t function properly, an error message would be flashed across the screen. The problem stems from the fact that such error messages sometimes include your server path, the whole of which is visible in the error report. Thus, disabling error reporting is the best possible solution.

Never Put Author Usernames on Display

Never leave the WordPress defaults intact. It makes it very easy for hackers to find out your username, and since, more often than not, you are the administrator too, they get access to your admin username as well. This is never a good sign. Hackers can use even the smallest bit of info to compromise your site. The best course of action would be to hide the username of the author. Then if hackers try to get admin information, they’ll be directed back to the homepage.

Always Monitor the Activity on Your Dashboard

If your site has lots of visitors, you should always keep a close eye on what’s going on using your dashboard. It isn’t that all of them are up to no good, but sometimes when there’s too much activity on your site, it pays to be alert. The tiniest misstep can have huge repercussions. This is perhaps the reason why a lot of admins choose to log their dashboard activity – it enables them to retrace the user’s steps up till the point when the site broke down. The dashboard even gives you the opportunity to retrace your own steps.

Your security receives a much-needed boost as you can now connect the dots between a particular action and a particular reaction. Now if your site breaks down due to a certain file upload, you can investigate deeper to see if any malicious code was present or not.

It is possible that you might find the automated information log for WordPress difficult to use and cluttered. In that case, you can always go for a plugin that organizes all of the data.

Keep the Login Page Hidden

It’s true that hiding some elements of your page won’t deter hackers from accessing them, but at least you’ll put up one heck of a resistance. And that is always a good sign! You can rename or relocate your login page to confuse hackers. Most brute force attacks are automated, so when your login page is a little different than the norm, the impact of the attacks will be weaker. There are loads of plugins that can help you make such a simple change.

Update Your Computer

It’s often seen that despite the best security measures, hackers are accessing the WordPress site. This occurs due to vulnerabilities in the computer itself. Your only solution is to keep the system updated. Install software patches as soon as they are released. Upgrade to a newly released operating system as soon as possible.

The task of safeguarding your WordPress site involves a lot more than security plugin installation. You need to devise a complete strategy, taking even subtle nuances into consideration. We sometimes tend to overlook the smaller things, but these can make all the difference between good security and great security.

Death Stranding Spoilers: 3 Core Themes In The Trailer That Reveal What The Game Is All About [VIDEO]

The trailer for Kojima's upcoming game has a lot of spoilers what the game is all about. Read on to find what those hints are.The trailer for Death Stranding has been released and there are three core themes scattered all throughout the trailer which reveals what the game is all about or at least what the story is all about.

Hideo Kojima himself has highlighted these elements in his interviews and official statements. If you have noticed it in his interviews, he hints a number of metaphors that points to this idea.

One of the biggest examples of this theme is the umbilical cord that connects Norman Reedus and the baby. Even the dead things, crabs, and whales, littered in the game has this umbilical cord that hints at the connection. Even the title flashing on the screen has this “cord” growing out of them.

The umbilical cord symbolizes the connection of two living things where one living thing gives life to another. Thus, as you see this umbilical cord connecting these organisms in Death Stranding. This also suggests that this is not a normal world as men and creatures are bound by this single cord.

The first hint that suggests relativity is the dog tags or the necklace Norman Reedus’ character is wearing. Kojima already referred to these necklaces as “dog tags” in his interviews. One Reddit has found a high-resolution image on the servers of Kojima Productions and found that two of the dog tags have been etched with scientific equations.

The first equation contains the Schwarzschild radius, which is related to black holes. The other equation contains the Dirac equation, a breakthrough accomplishment in particle physics by British physicist Paul Dirac. This equation accurately describes particles, such as quarks and electrons, in the context of quantum mechanics. This equation also led to the discovery of the existence of antimatter.

With those elements in the game, Death Stranding must have something to do with quantum mechanics or something related to it. However, both of these equations are related to relativity.

Concept of Rapture

In Christian eschatology, the rapture has something to do with the end times. This belief holds that in the last day of humankind, everyone will be judged. At this time, sinners will be punished and good people will be rewarded. This judgment is also one of the main themes of the William Blake poem used by Kojima in Death Stranding. In one of the stanzas of the poem, it talks about cruelty to animals and the judgment that will occur as a result of the cruelty. Blake talks about how human cruelly killing animals, even if it’s just a moth, can lead to retaliation. Death Stranding’s trailer has hints of this cruelty.

Pick up artist jailed after raping woman and blogging about the attack

A ‘pick up artist’ has been convicted of raping a woman and blogging about the attack, it has been reported. The woman was so drunk at the time she had passed out in her own vomit when he committed the offence.

Alex Smith, 27, taught men “rejection-proof” techniques for “seducing” women as an instructor at a company called Efficient Pickup, DailyBeastreports. He and a pick up colleague met two women on a night out in San Diego and invited them to a flat where a third man, one of their “students” was waiting.

When one of the women passed out, Smith reportedly raped her and asked the student to do so as well. The second woman entered the room to find her friend naked, face down in her own vomit and surrounded by the two men who were naked. They reportedly informed her “we just tag-teamed your friend” before ejecting both women from the apartment.

The woman who had been assaulted contacted San Diego police but they reportedly did not attend the scene or question the men. She later investigated the men by searching online and found “pick up” forums in which they discussed committing the attack against her. After she submitted the accounts to police, the men were questioned and arrested.

When sentencing Smith, San Diego Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Fraser praised the woman’s “amazing” work to investigate the men and bring them to justice. He sentenced him to 8 years in prison, telling the court: “The one term that is very appropriate for this particular trial is ‘misogyny’. The defendant did treat the victim in this case not as a human being but simply as an object.

“And I’ve got to tell you, having sat up here for 18 years, there’s a lot of people that have sat in that [the accused’s] chair and I can’t recall- murderers, rapists, kidnappers- I don’t know if I’ve seen one that has been as mean and cruel as you have been.”

Judge Fraser added: “This is not a hard decision at all. In fact, if I could give you more time, I would. But the law only allows me to give you a certain amount of time.”

The man who allegedly also took part in the incident as Smith’s student is due to be sentenced in February.

In a statement submitted to the Daily Beast following the verdict, the victim said: “My hope is that these men within the pickup artist community with notions of women as disposable sexual objects only to be controlled, used, and shared amongst each other, will see that their actions are considered criminal and will not go unpunished.

”Furthermore, I hope this will encourage other rape victims, especially those cases that are difficult to prove — involving unconsciousness, alcohol, or drugs — to feel confident in the justice system once again.”
