No matter how well you think you know your site, a crawler will always turn up something new. In some cases, it’s those things that you don’t know about that can sink your SEO ship.

Search engines use highly developed bots to crawl the web looking for content to index. If a search engine’s crawlers can’t find the content on your site, it won’t rank or drive natural search traffic. Even if it’s findable, if the content on your site isn’t sending the appropriate relevance signals, it still won’t rank or drive natural search traffic.

Since they mimic the actions of more sophisticated search engine crawlers, third-party crawlers, such as DeepCrawl and Screaming Frog’s SEO Spider, can uncover a wide variety of technical and content issues to improve natural search performance.

7 Reasons to Use a Site Crawler

What’s out there? Owners and managers think of their websites as the pieces that customers will (hopefully) see. But search engines find and remember all the obsolete and orphaned areas of sites, as well. A crawler can help catalog the outdated content so that you can determine what to do next. Maybe some of it is still useful if it’s refreshed. Maybe some of it can be 301 redirected so that its link authority can strengthen other areas of the site.

How is this page performing? Some crawlers can pull analytics data in from Google Search Console and Google Analytics. They make it easy to view correlations between the performance of individual pages and the data found on the page itself.

Not enough indexation or way too much? By omission, crawlers can identify what’s potentially not accessible by bots. If your crawl report has some holes where you know sections of your site should be, can bots access that content? If not, there might be a problem with disallows, noindexcommands, or the way it’s coded that is keeping bots out.

Alternately, a crawler can show you when you have duplicate content. When your sifting through the URLs listed, look for telltale signs like redundant product ID numbers or duplicate title tags or other signs that the content might be the same between two or more pages.

Keep in mind that the ability to crawl does not equate to indexation, merely the ability to be indexed.

What’s that error, and why is that redirecting? Crawlers make finding and reviewing technical fixes much faster. A quick crawl of the site automatically returns a server header status code for every page encountered. Simply filter for the 404s and you have a list of errors to track down. Need to test those redirects that just went live? Switch to list mode and specify the old URLs to crawl. Your crawler will tell you which are redirecting and where they’re sending visitors to now.

Is the metadata complete? Without a crawler, it’s too difficult to identify existing metadata and create a plan to optimize it on a larger scale. Use it to quickly gather data about title tags, meta descriptions, and keywords, H headings, language tags, and more.

Does the site send mixed signals? When not structured correctly, data on individual pages can tie bots into knots. Canonical tags and robots directives, in combination with redirects and disallows affecting the same pages, can send a combination of confusing signals to search engines that can mess up your indexation and ability to perform in natural search.

If you have a sudden problem with performance in a key page, check for a noindex directive and, also, confirm the page that the canonical tag specifies. Does it convey contradictory signals to a redirect sending traffic to the page, or a disallow in the robots.txt file? You never know when something could accidentally change as a result of some other release that developers pushed out.

Is the text correct? Some crawlers also allow you to search for custom bits of text on a page. Maybe your company is rebranding and you want to be sure that you find every instance of the old brand on the site. Or maybe you recently updated schema on a page template and you want to be sure that it’s found on certain pages. If it’s something that involves searching for and reporting on a piece of text within the source code of a group of web pages, your crawler can help.

Plan Crawl Times

It’s important to remember, however, that third-party crawlers can put a heavy burden on your servers. They tend to be set to crawl too quickly as a default, and the rapid-fire requests can stress your servers if they’re already experiencing a high customer volume. Your development team may even have blocked your crawler previously based on suspected scraping by spammers.

Talk to your developers to explain what you need to accomplish and ask for the best time to do it. They almost certainly have a crawler that they use — they may even be able to give you access to their software license. Or they may volunteer to do the crawl for you and send you the file. At the least, they’ll want to advise you as to the best times of day to crawl and the frequency at which to set the bot’s requests. It’s a small courtesy that helps build respect.

Two killed in Wednesday car crash on Route 7 in Brandon

BRANDON — An elderly couple from Rutland was killed and a New Haven man was injured in a two-car crash on Route 7 in Brandon Wednesday afternoon.

Dead are Charles K. Ovian, 84, and Sally Ovian, 83.

On Dec. 28 at just before 2:30 p.m. Brandon police responded to a report of a  two-car crash with entrapment in front of Otter Valley Union High School south of downtown.

Officers are still investigating the circumstances of the crash, but they report that when they arrived they found a blue 2012 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck crashed in the southbound lane of Franklin Street/Route 7 and a silver 2014 Buick Enclave crashed off the roadway in the southbound side lawn.

Both vehicles sustained extensive damage to their front driver-side bumpers, according to police. Airbags had deployed in both vehicles. Charles Ovian, the driver of the Buick, and Sally Ovian were both treated on the scene for extensive injuries.

The pickup driver, Ryan Kennelly, 22, of New Haven, was being tended to by several witnesses to the crash when police officers arrived.

Soon thereafter staff from the Brandon Area Rescue Squad and Rutland Regional Ambulance Service arrived and provided medical aid to all three people involved in the crash.

Brandon police were also helped by the Brandon and Pittsford fire departments, as well as the Vermont State Police and its accident reconstruction team, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Rutland County State’s Attorney’s office.

Charles Ovian and Kennelly were transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center for further medical aid, and Sally Ovian was airlifted by helicopter to the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire for treatment of her critical injuries.

The medical examiners declared the Ovians deceased.

2016 is drawing to a close, so it’s time to take a look back at some of the most important and influential trends in search engine optimization (SEO) that 2016 had to offer.

Why do I do this? Well, for starters, it’s fun to look back at some of the predictions I made last year and see how they panned out. It’s also a good opportunity to catch people up if they haven’t been paying close attention to SEO news, and it gives me a platform to make predictions about how 2017 will go as well.

The SEO industry, like the technology sector, never leaves us without something to talk about—at least not for long—and this year, there was plenty to talk about, no matter what your role in the SEO industry was. Let’s take a look at some of the biggest trends that dominated the past year:

1. Accelerated mobile pages.

Accelerated mobile pages (AMPs) were actually introduced at the end of 2015 by Google, as a way to make the web easier to navigate and read for mobile users (following the years-long trend of mobile optimization from the search giant). However, they underwent further development and became very popular this year. By using protocols made publicly available by Google, you can turn any content on your site into an AMP, which basically means your page will load much faster when accessed by a mobile device. The benefit is you could earn a place higher in search results, in an AMP “carousel” with other AMPs, along with a tiny lightning bolt symbol next to your content. It’s an important gateway for organic search visibility that shouldn’t be neglected.

2. Video content.

Video content took another step forward this past year, thanks especially to brands like Facebook, which are not only adding more video functionality but rewarding users and brands that use them with higher visibility. Nothing much has changed to the way search engines index and provide videos, but video content is in higher demand, so it’s seeing more links, shares, and interaction than ever before.

3. Short-section, long-form content.

Speaking of content-related trends, long-form content is still riding waves as the most popular and effective form of content marketing; however, there’s a specific type of long-form content that’s become especially noteworthy. Written content several thousand words long that’s broken up into much smaller, distinct sections (like tiny chapters) has risen drastically in popularity for a few reasons. First, long-form content is an easy way to distinguish yourself from the competition and provide more direct value to your readers. But standard long-form content isn’t enough; breaking it up into small sections like this makes it easier to read and digest on mobile devices (and keeps the language user-friendly at the same time).

4. Real-time Google updates.

Google also kept up its trend of incorporating major branches of its algorithm into its “core” by unveiling Penguin 4.0, which involved a migration of the Penguin algorithm to the main search ranking algorithm the company uses. Penguin now updates in real-time, meaning if you’re caught using questionable link tactics, you’ll get penalized faster, but if you start repairing your reputation, you’ll be able to recover faster as well. Faster is the name of the game here.

5. Unexplained ranking shakeups.

2016 also saw a number of strange, unnamed, unexplained Google updates that shook up organic search rankings for unknown reasons. For example, there was a “major” update May 10 that featured an entire week of increased ranking volatility, and an unconfirmed update known colloquially as “Possum” on September 1. Possum seemed focused on local rankings (mostly), but SEO experts still aren’t sure what the purpose of these updates were, or if they’re part of some bigger plan for the future of the search algorithm.

In 2017, I anticipate we’ll see more favoritism for AMPs in search results, with more brands taking advantage of the option.

2. The Rise of “Dense” Content.

People are getting sick of reading the same fluff content over and over again, in different words. Early content marketing efforts were focused on producing as much bite-sized content as possible, but for the past few years, we’ve seen a surge in “epic” content; long pieces that cover a topic comprehensively. But as the market’s been flooded with both types of content, I feel a new trend may ignore length entirely, focusing on providing as much information as possible in the smallest possible space—dense content—to appeal to readers.

3. Machine Learning Will Change the Way the Algorithm Works.

Google RankBrain was released late last year, and opened the door to the possibility of algorithmic machine learning. The extension of Google Hummingbird functions as a way to gradually learn more about how users phrase conversational queries—and update its algorithm automatically accordingly. We haven’t seen another update like it since, but I anticipate we’re overdue for one. Google will probably start releasing more machine learning updates as the years go on, starting next year, and we may even see machine learning in other areas, such as data interpretation or marketing automation, as well.

4. Personal Branding Will Become an SEO Secret Weapon.

I’ve been a proponent of personal branding as a core strategy for SEO for many years now. With a personal brand, you’ll have an easier time securing guest posts, building user trust, and driving more traffic to your website. However, a shockingly low number of brands have taken advantage of this in their SEO efforts. As social media platforms like Facebook continue refining their algorithms to favor individual posts over branded posts, I anticipate we’ll see more companies and organizations take advantage of personal branding. This will simultaneously lead to more opportunities and more competition, so watch out—and make sure your strategy is in order.

5. User Experience Optimization (UEO) Will Start to Blur the Lines with SEO.

User experience has always been important to SEO—at least to some degree. Google favors sites that are properly optimized for mobile devices, ones that load quickly, and ones where it’s clear that users are enjoying their experience (with prolonged time spent on page, etc.). But in 2017, we may see an increased emphasis on user experience—especially as it relates to mobile devices. AMPs, which I’ve already mentioned, could be the first sign of this, but look for other ways that Google will favor pages that offer better user experiences overall.
